Job description

Job Summary:
The Regional Operations Specialist role is a hybrid role that integrates expertise in safety leadership, production, and engineering to foster a safe and efficient working environment, supporting both employee well-being and operational excellence. The Regional Operations Specialist ensures compliance with safety and quality standards, reduces risks, addresses capacity and equipment enhancements, and improves operational efficiency. The position involves designing safety programs, analyzing workplace incidents, optimizing production methods, overseeing larger capital projects, and maintain plant capacity oversight and planning, all to enhance safety, increase productivity and reduce costs.

This role works closely with facility safety, production, and maintenance teams to help them succeed and deliver high impact results. Field support execution is the key component of this position, while developing leadership skills and results in continuous improvement, team problem solving, and project management.

Compensation:
- $120,000 to $140,000 per year based on qualifications and experience.
- 15% bonus eligibility.

Reporting: Direct Line to North American Safety & Production Manager; Dotted line to North American Engineering Manager

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Set clear expectations, recognize success, and address performance needs.
  2. Utilize key performance indicators; lead with a sense of urgency to drive and positively impact safety, quality, cost and speed.
  3. Partner with Regional Manager and General Managers to develop, coach and train production management and maintenance teams and build a talent pipeline.
  4. Develop and sustain employee development and training programs to bolster capability.
  5. Provide concise, action-driven site summaries and guidance for locations and follow-up.

Safety:

  1. Develop and manage health, safety, and loss control policies and procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA/Ministry of Labour and other relevant regulations.
  2. Monitor and evaluate the workplace for compliance with safety standards, identifying and addressing risks proactively.
  3. Design and implement safety training programs, including new employee orientation, emergency preparedness, hazardous material handling, and the use of protective equipment.
  4. Investigate workplace incidents, analyze root causes, and implement preventive measures to reduce accidents and occupational illnesses.
  5. Maintain accurate records of safety audits, training, and incident investigations, and provide reports to leadership.
  6. Provide oversight for safety compliance, conduct safety audits.

Production Process Improvement:

  1. Plan, design, and implement methods to improve production processes, focusing on increasing efficiency and reducing operational costs.
  2. Review existing production methods, identify inefficiencies, and recommend solutions aligned with organizational goals.
  3. Ensure production processes comply with quality standards and approved methodologies.
  4. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement changes and ensure smooth operations.
  5. Monitor and evaluate production performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and sustain high productivity levels.

Engineering:

  1. Influence and gain alignment with regional leaders and site management leaders to develop scope, cost and schedule. Own, manage and communicate projects to key metrics.
  2. Assess and create action plans within the day to day provisions of all specialized engineering support services including safety, environmental, facility, industrial, power plant, repairs and maintenance, wastewater treatment, and utilities.
  3. Utilize judgment to make recommendations to the North American Engineering Manager for production and/or process improvements.
  4. Guide teams with location staff and Regional Engineering peers and the Team Leader to resolve technical issues related to plant operations as necessary.
  5. Identify critical needs and improvement opportunities, create business case, and pursue project opportunities through ideation, approval, implementation and start-up.
  6. Provide environmental oversight, guidance and recommendations to the Regional Manager and branch management teams to ensure environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.
  7. Promote safety within branch visits, observations, project scope(s), and maintenance activities. Partner with the Regional Safety & Production Specialist to improve safe operating behaviors and overall safety performance.
  8. Implement rigor in all phases of project management with effective end game results that include system performance, operating procedures, maintenance requirements and training.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Chemical Engineering preferred.
  2. Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance, safety practices, and quality standards.
  3. Prior multi-location / multi-provincial experience.
  4. Lean manufacturing and safety certifications are pluses.
  5. Demonstrated experience of continuous improvement and problem-solving methodologies.
  6. AutoCad experience preferred.
  7. PLC programming knowledge preferred.
  8. Industrial wastewater experience a plus.
  9. Solid computer skills including MS Office.
  10. Analytical skills to evaluate processes and implement effective solutions.
  11. Excellent communication and leadership abilities to engage teams and drive change.

Office Location:
- Successful candidate must have the ability to work from home (must have a home office at their residence).

Travel Requirements:
- Regular travel throughout the region is required and is estimated at 50% to 60%.

Typical Environmental Conditions:
- Office and remote work at industrial facilities.
- Working in and out of branch locations.
- Operating vehicles on public roads.

Physical Requirements:
- Physical Demands/Requirements - sitting, grasping, driving, stooping, lifting up to 25 lbs, standing, walking, writing, speaking, hearing.
- Work within an industrial environment (heat, noise, dust).
- Must perform the essential duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation efficiently and accurately, and without causing significant safety threat to self or others.
