Job Description

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to a designated Canadian GM Facility at least three times per week.

GM is undergoing a major transformation in how we operate and influence the future of transportation. Our Global Workplace Safety team is dedicated to creating a safe and healthy workplace free from injuries and illnesses.

We are seeking an experienced, motivated Industrial Hygiene specialist to support GM North America Manufacturing Operations. You will develop qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments at US and Canadian facilities and oversee UAW-IH Technicians at US sites. You will also serve as a Subject Matter Expert for various IH topics, depending on your focus and our needs. In this role, you will collaborate with site Safety teams to develop solutions for IH-related issues to protect our employees.

The ideal candidate will embody GM values and have a solid knowledge of Industrial Hygiene fundamentals and exposure assessment methods. Proficiency in leading IH activities through facilitation, teamwork, and relationship-building is essential, along with a passion for workplace health and safety.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Provide site/Customer consultation on implementing Corporate and GMNA Industrial Hygiene policies and procedures.
  2. Facilitate communication between IH management, Site Safety & IH teams, and NA Group Safety Manager.
  3. Support the Workplace Safety System, especially IH-related Performance and Technical standards.
  4. Implement action items aligned with the Business Plan.
  5. Recommend, oversee, and conduct site IH surveys, collect air samples, and coordinate laboratory analysis.
  6. Ensure air sample plans, ventilation checks, hazardous materials control, MRF Mist Maps, and sound surveys are performed as required.
  7. Interpret industrial hygiene data and advise management accordingly.
  8. Provide training and consultation for local IH resources, including UAW IH Technicians.
  9. Advise on chemical management with hazardous material committees and safety committees at facilities.
  10. Interpret and communicate regulatory standards and GM requirements.
  11. Support the maintenance of industrial hygiene equipment.
  12. Conduct or oversee annual IH assessments and provide feedback to management.
  13. Assist in resolving regulatory, workers' compensation, or labor issues.
  14. Perform other special assignments as needed.
  15. Travel to GM Canada and US locations.

Your Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Safety and Industrial Hygiene.
  • University degree in engineering, industrial hygiene, or safety-related field.
  • Working towards professional certification in occupational/industrial hygiene.
  • Automotive manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse personnel and build relationships.
  • Extensive knowledge of regulations and analytical skills to evaluate hazards and recommend controls.
  • Leadership, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Professional ethics, results-oriented, strategic thinking, and global perspective.
  • Ability to travel to the US.
