Position Overview

The Regional Health & Safety Manager-North supports Hexion’s strategic and tactical plans for all Health and Safety matters across five manufacturing sites in the northern U.S. (OR, MT, WI, NY) and three in Canada. The role requires understanding the regulatory and tactical overlap of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Process Safety regulations for both countries. The successful candidate fosters a culture of engagement, accountability, and compliance through oversight of safety programs aligned with Hexion’s goals. The position provides leadership, coaching, and technical expertise to site teams to meet these objectives.

Job Responsibilities

H&S Function Specific

  • Develop and implement employee safety & health programs.
  • Participate in EHS innovation, improvement, and realignment projects at various levels.
  • Provide and monitor safety training programs for employees.
  • Promote and support an EHS culture by implementing core programs and policies.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance at all facilities.
  • Develop and enforce chemical safety protocols, including spill prevention, storage, handling, SDS maintenance, and waste management.
  • Support safety programs at regional sites, including workplace safety and contractor management.
  • Identify hazards and develop corrective actions; lead incident investigations using cause mapping and 5-why analysis.
  • Maintain safety records and report to regulatory agencies.
  • Identify risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Manage hazardous materials handling and disposal.
  • Engage actively with site safety teams and interact with associates in the field.
  • Assist and lead regulatory inspections and audits.

Organizational Leadership

  • Align safety initiatives with organizational goals through collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Develop change management strategies for safety initiatives.
  • Coach and mentor teams on safety best practices.
  • Design and deliver training to address skill gaps.
  • Establish KPIs and monitor safety performance.
  • Engage stakeholders across all levels and promote continuous improvement.
  • Develop clear communication materials for safety initiatives.
  • Anticipate risks and develop mitigation plans.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and lessons learned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years in chemical or related manufacturing with progressive H&S responsibilities in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. and Canadian H&S regulations.
  • Experience with Process Safety Management regulations.
  • Proven ability to lead change and drive continuous improvement.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and influence across teams.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial safety, engineering, hazardous materials management, or related field; Master’s preferred.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CSP, CHMM, PE) required.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to obtain work visas for U.S. site visits and international travel (Canadian applicants).
  • Travel 45-65% as needed.

  • Conduct safety inspections, lead training, investigate incidents, participate in safety meetings, and coordinate emergency drills.

Regional Level

  • Perform safety audits, attend regional safety meetings, ensure regulatory compliance, and facilitate risk assessment workshops.

  • Participate in safety strategy meetings, develop policies, report safety performance, and collaborate with other departments.
