Job description

Our Chalk River location is looking for a Recycle Fuel Fabrication Laboratories (RFFL) Technician to support our Licensed Nuclear Facilities Branch. Can you see yourself in a role where you will be working with a team to support activities involving fuel fabrication technology (MOX fuel and molten salt synthesis) and actinide chemistry experiments (for example, alpha therapy)? What will you be doing!

• Conducting research and development experiments.
• Fabricating and characterizing fuel materials under the direction of the Supervising Technician.
• Performing and assisting with the installation, inspections and modifications to fuel fabrication and other experimental equipment.
• Ensuring that the equipment within the facility is operating in a safe and efficient manner according to regulations and procedures.
• Commissioning new equipment and apparatus for fuel fabrication and characterization.
• Conducting research and development and compliance tests in accordance with work plans, procedures, and technical specifications.
• Assisting in developing work plans and procedures.
• Solving technical problems involved with equipment and procedures.
• Performing independent inspections and tests.
• Maintaining zone inventories of fissile materials.
• Recording observations and data in route sheets and logbooks.
• Participating in facility compliance activities.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

• Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education in a relevant field.
  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years of pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
• Experience
  • One to three years of relevant experience will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical systems or equipment is a significant asset.
  • Experience with fuel handling and glovebox work is an asset.
  • Experience in a licensed nuclear facility is an asset.
  • Experience wearing a respirator is an asset.
  • Hands-on experience performing experiments is desirable.
  • Experience in laboratory practices and techniques, record-keeping, and organization skills.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficiency in laboratory practices and techniques, record-keeping, and organization skills.
  • Strong computer skills (including Word and Excel).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to maintain awareness of surroundings and adopt safe lab practices.
  • An aptitude for learning new skills, multitasking, meeting deadlines, and achieving objectives and goals.
  • Working knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and equipment is an asset.
  • Ability to wear a respirator.
• Security clearance eligibility required:
  • Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
    

Working Conditions:

• Expected to work with hands in a laboratory setting.
• Must be able to wear a respirator.
• Work in moderate radiation hazard environments where PPE (Personal protective equipment) is required.
