Position Summary
Number of Workers: 2-3 Temporary Full-Time Summer positions
Hours of Work: Shift range is between 8 am-5 pm, Mon-Fri. from July 2 – Aug. 27.

Department: Community Services – Recreation
The Tla’amin Community Recreation Department is seeking Recreation Workers to help lead a variety of recreation programs and activities, while ensuring the safety and well-being of participants.If you are passionate about working with people to help enhance the quality of life for your entire community through arts, fitness, and community programming, then a career in recreation is for you. This position will focus on our youth summer camp program for school age čičuy (children) 5-12 years of age.
Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices, and procedures as directed by the Recreation Manager, Recreation Youth Coordinator and Recreation Assistant. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees, and general matters of the Nation.
- Assisting to organize and plan daily and monthly activities for summer camp.
- Leading a variety of games, crafts, sport, and other activities while engaging with the children to provide a fun and safe experience.
- Always ensuring the safety of participants.
- Assists with evaluating program content and participant satisfaction.
- Cleaning, setting up and taking down equipment before, during and after programs.
- Organizing equipment storage.
- Monitoring and maintaining the quality, appearance, and safety of all equipment.
- Assists Summer Camp Recreation Leader & Recreation Assistant in related program duties and promotion of programs
- Build relationships with all ages, but most importantly with thečičuy (children) and parents/guardians to ensure information is shared clearly.
- Checking and responding to work related emails daily and responding accordingly.
- Performing other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with all ages.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to build strong relationships and deal with people in a professional manner.
- Ability to keep accurate records and produce required written reports.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, enthusiasm and positive attitude when relating to all ages and the public.
- Passionate about recreation and able to lead indoor and outdoor activities.
- Good organizational and planning skills.
- Basic computer skills including MS Word and Outlook.
- Physical ability to lift and move program related equipment.
- Knowledge of recreational and social interests and of various recreational activities such as games, sports, arts & summer activities
- Ensuring a safe environment for all and overseeing sign-in and sign-out of program participants.
- Leading activities with enthusiasm, instructing based on activity objectives, and adjusting activities based on age, skill, and physical abilities.
- Ensuring that appropriate skills are taught to participants and progression through levels takes place.
- Demonstrating ability to work effectively in a team setting while supporting other leaders, as needed.
- Providing exceptional customer service.
Qualifications
- An original Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Completion of Grade 12.
- Responsible Adult Certification
- Pursuing post-secondary education in the field of Recreation or Education. Previous experience working with and leading programs for children and youth is an asset.
- First Aid Certificate minimum 8-hour course.
- BC Driver’s License “Class 5” and an acceptable BC drivers abstract required.
- BC Driver’s License “Class 4” preferred.
Work Conditions
- Work is performed mostly during the day, in both indoor and outdoor environments, participating in and facilitating group activities for different age groups of children and youth.
- Must be able to lift and move equipment and be at a reasonable level of physical fitness to successfully perform tasks.
- Some office work/computer work may be required.
