Job summary

AgeCare is seeking a Recreation Worker to plan, develop, and run meaningful recreation and leisure activities that promote wellbeing, purpose, creativity, and community for residents. You will assist in creating engaging spaces, communicate with residents, families and volunteers, and observe changes in residents' abilities to update care plans as needed.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation or related field.
• Enrolled in a program with intent to complete within three years of hire.
• Alternative: health care related degree with demonstrated recreation service experience in health care.

Responsibilities

• Assist in development, planning and implementing daily recreation activities in home and community.
• Create engaging spaces/environments that support meaningful resident activity and participation.
• Maintain communications with residents, families, volunteers and community groups.
• Observe and document changes in residents' ability to participate and update plan of care.
• Support departments to foster resident engagement and participate in program evaluation.

Education

Graduate of a post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation and leisure studies or therapeutic recreation

Health-care related degree or diploma with recreation experience

Requirements

• Prior experience working with seniors, preferably in a long-term care setting.
• Graduate of a post-secondary diploma or degree program in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation or other related field from a community college or university.
• Enrolled in a community college or university in a diploma or degree program in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, or other related field with the intent to successfully complete the program within three years of being hired.
• OR
• A post-secondary degree or diploma in a health care related field and demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in providing recreation and leisure services in a health care setting including:
• Planning, developing, and facilitating meaningful activities across all domains of wellness for individuals of varying levels of functioning,
• Assessment, care planning and other related documentation,
• Therapeutic programming techniques and approaches,
• Application of recreation and leisure principles and practices and implementation of these in a long-term care or health care setting,
• And supporting others to foster a culture of resident engagement.
• Salary: $24.93 per hour
• Salary placement based on qualifications and experience.

Assists in development, planning and implementing daily recreation and leisure activities, both in the home and in the community, using a collection of holistic resident information and choices, and in a manner that reflects AgeCare's philosophy and approach to resident programming. Assists in creating and maintaining engaging spaces/environments in the home that support meaningful resident activity and participation. Develops and maintains good communications with residents and their families, friends, as well as volunteers, community groups and agencies. Observes, reports and documents as required, any changes in the resident's ability to participate in activities, updating plan of care as appropriate. Supports all departments in their efforts to foster resident engagement in meaningful ways. Models the way, leading programs in a manner that supports and maximizes residents' skills and abilities. Participates in the on-going evaluation of the recreation program and related quality improvement processes.
