Job summary

The Good Samaritan Society is seeking a Recreation Therapy Aide to join our care teams in Delta. You will work under the Manager, Site and Clinical Services to deliver engaging recreation programs that enhance residents’ lives.

You will plan activities with residents, collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team, and apply your dementia care experience and interpersonal skills to support safe, meaningful experiences.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 education required.
• Post-secondary education in therapeutic recreation preferred.
• Alberta: Basic First Aid and CPR; BC: Intermediate First Aid and CPR.
• Food Safety Basic or equivalent (Alberta) or Food Safe 1 (BC).
• Class IV driver’s license may be required where the home operates a bus.

Responsibilities

Job description

In support of the Mission, Vision and Values of The Good Samaritan Society and Good Samaritan Canada (“Good Samaritan”), the Recreation Therapy Aide (RTA) works collaboratively with members of a multi-disciplinary team in the provision and promotion of recreation programs. The RTA performs their work in a manner to provide a positive and safe experience for each resident, work performed in accordance with the resident’s care plan, Good Samaritan standards, and consistent with Good Samaritan’s “Being and Belonging” model of care. The RTA assists in developing, implementing, planning and evaluating recreation programs to improve the quality of life for residents. The RTA also works with residents to plan recreation activities of their choice. The RTA works under the direction of the Manager, Site and Clinical Services or designate and where present in the care home/program, a Recreation Therapist

Education and Other Qualifications

Grade 12

• Post‑secondary education in therapeutic recreation
• ALBERTA:
  o Basic First Aid and CPR certificate
  o Food Safety Basic or equivalent
• BRITISH COLUMBIA:
  o Intermediate First Aid and CPR certificate
  o Food Safe 1 or equivalent
• Class IV driver’s license (required only where the Good Samaritan care home/program operates a bus)

Work Experience:

• Experience working with older adults and persons with disabilities, both physical and cognitive.
• Experience in dementia care.
  NOTE: An equivalent combination of education and other qualifications and work experience may be considered.
  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to work as a member of a team and to request guidance and consultation.
• Willing to accept direction, guidance and constructive feedback.
• Proficient interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively deal with challenging circumstances in a diplomatic and professional manner.
• Ability to communicate in and understand English, both verbally and in writing.

Requirements:

• A current and clear Criminal Records Check Form and Clearance Letter prior to the hire date.
• A tuberculosis screening that has been completed no more than 12 months prior to the hire date.
