Job description

Your Opportunity:

This part time Recreation Therapist I position is based out of the Halvar Jonson Center for Brain Injury (HJCBI) at the Centennial Center for Mental Health and Brain Injury, and is responsible for the Recreation Therapy program for patients with acquired brain injury. In the role of Recreation Therapist, you will be responsible for the planning and implementation of individual and group social, leisure and respite activities for patients admitted to HJCBI. This will include assessment and development of individual therapy plans. You will be expected to communicate and collaborate with the residents, families and interdisciplinary team regarding the care, opportunities and therapeutic recreation programming provided to the patients. Duties include program planning and implementation, program organization, and support of daily activities. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. As a Recreation Therapist I, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive services for patients (clients, residents) within your assigned program or service area. You will ensure the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence based, patient-and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. You will complete assessment, treatment, education and management of clients¿ treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Six months experience in brain injury rehabilitation and aquatic therapy desired. Current Heart and Stroke – Basic Life Support Provider (BLS-HCP) required. Ability to exercise professional judgement and initiative. Experience working within a collaborative interdisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications:

Aquatic Therapy experience. Six months experience in working in neurology with stroke and brain injured patients is required. Class 4 license or eligible to obtain.
