Job Profile

Under The General Supervision Of The Recreation Technician E, The Recreation Technician D Assists In Overseeing The Provision Of Recreation Services For a Cross Section Of The Community Including, But Not Limited To

  • Planning, supervising, monitoring activities of the program, including monitoring staff qualifications, schedules, orients, trains staff, and provides feedback to junior staff, volunteers and contract leaders and evaluates programs and services.
  • Participating in the recruitment, selection, training and performance management of staff.
  • Development and implementation of program planning and design within a recreation unit.
  • Planning proposals, planning development and scheduling.
  • Defining program options by liaising within the community (e.g. networks, groups and organizations to assist in identifying program interests.
  • Maintaining an inventory of available instructors, and ensures program evaluations are reviewed after each session.
  • Facilitating facility bookings, performing administrative tasks which may include the purchase of supplies and equipment, track and report on attendance, collect fees, monitor expenditures, and maintain other records;
  • Assisting external groups/organizations related to service provisions (e.g. equipment, staff person, running a special event, facility rental etc.)
  • Provides feedback to the Recreation Technician E in researching community needs and new program trends and the preparation of leisure awareness materials.
  • Provides information on assigned programs and facilities to the Recreation Technician E on a regular basis.

As The Recreation Technician D, You Will

  • Plans and schedules the delivery of recreation programs and services.
  • Coordinates the selection, training and evaluation of related staff, program leaders and volunteers. Schedules and supervises staff, related to programs.
  • Development/maintenance of program data systems
  • Works in accordance with City and Departmental policies and guidelines, maintains financial and other information related to programs.
  • Performs other duties associated with the position.

Your Education And Qualifications Include

  • Must possess a Grade 12 and/or a combination of post-secondary education in Recreation/Leisure Services, Community Development, Business Administration or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
  • Three years relevant recreation and leisure services experience in the supervision of programs and facilities.
  • Possess practical knowledge and experience in working with community groups, agencies and organizations.
  • Practical knowledge of recreation and delivery of leisure services philosophy.
  • Experience in the delivery of recreation and leisure services and has supervised programs, facilities and employees at a level that requires limited guidance.
  • Demonstrated experience in the administration of recreation programs/facilities, and is familiar with the use of computers, databases, inputting and generating reports, record keeping, and registration/HR applications.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook) at a basic level and the ability to learn new technology.
  • Ability to review financial information and monitor expenditures.
  • Working knowledge of recreation materials and equipment, and general knowledge of facility maintenance and operations.
  • Knowledge of safety systems, and is able to implement safety practices within programs and services to provide for safe environments for employees and the public.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues and information in a confidential, tactful and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English — oral and written. Ability to communicate in other languages is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills both oral and written in dealing with all levels of staff, internal/external stakeholders, community and the public in a respectful manner. Is able to build and maintain respectful relationships.
  • Ability to make presentations for training purposes and lead staff meetings.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, monitor, provide guidance, coach/mentor, supervise, and evaluate direct reports.
  • Must be willing to attend/complete other training as identified by the division/department/organization.
  • Must have successfully completed the following courses or be prepared to complete within one year:

Conditions Of Employment

  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Manitoba drivers’ License.
  • May be required to provide a vehicle for transportation while on City business subject to the terms and conditions of the City of Winnipeg Transportation Policy.
  • Must possess a valid Emergency First Aid certificate or higher and CPR Level C Certificate or equivalents prior to the start of employment and maintain certification as per division guidelines for the period of employment.
