Position Summary

Reporting to the Coordinator, Recreation, this position is responsible for supporting the safe and accessible delivery of recreation programs for the Town of Milton within the Aquatics portfolio, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures, and assists with the administration of programs and staff leadership and supervision. This role is responsible for providing regular evening and weekend on-the-job training and mentorship to part-time staff, as well as having scheduled on-deck shifts filling the program roles for which they are qualified.

We are hiring for two positions to support the Aquatics portfolio, with responsibilities divided across three Town facilities and one outdoor summer location.

Major Job Responsibilities

Actively support direct program delivery

  • Work scheduled in-program shifts (e.g. registered and drop-in programs, special events, etc.) based on the seasonal needs of the Aquatics team to ensure high quality and consistent program delivery.

  • Assist with emergency shift coverage as required, based on incumbent qualifications.

  • Respond to and mediate in-person customer questions, comments and concerns, escalating to Coordinator, Recreation when necessary.

  • May be required to obtain additional certifications to effectively provide direct program delivery, based on program needs.

Support, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate part-time program staff members

  • Conduct program visits, primarily during instructional program delivery, and complete staff evaluations as required.

  • Provide coaching and feedback to part-time program staff and volunteers during their shifts, including in-program coaching and mentorship, empowering part-time staff to deliver quality programs and excellent customer service.

  • Assist with the design, implementation, and delivery of staff training sessions to ensure policies and procedures are communicated, quality standards are maintained and improved, staff are prepared for emergency response.

Provide administrative support for the program team

  • Under the guidance of the Coordinator, Recreation, input and maintain recreation programs using recreation software (Xplor Recreation), including registered and drop-in programs.

  • Support the onboarding of part-time program staff and volunteers, including assistance with interviews, screening, and completion of onboarding processes (e.g. references check, certification verification, etc.).

  • Support the payroll process for part-time staff by reviewing scheduled and submitted hours and validating shift changes, ensuring timely submission of hours worked, etc.

  • Assist in the development, maintenance and distribution of schedules, lesson schematics and instructor class assignments, and supply inventories.

  • Assist with analyzing statistical information and preparation of reports to summarize findings related to program delivery results.

Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary diploma in Recreation & Leisure, or a related field; a post-secondary degree in Recreation & Leisure, or a related field, is preferred.

  • Minimum two (2) years working in a municipal recreation environment directly in Aquatics programming.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience overseeing staff and volunteers, and working with the general public.

  • Minimum two (2) years progressive supervisory experience in a municipal or recreation setting is preferred.

  • Current National Lifeguard certification.

  • High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certification.

  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim, Lifesaving and Emergency First Aid Instructor certifications.

  • Aquatic Supervisor Training certification or Aquatic Management Training.

  • Current Examiner certification (minimum of 1):

    • Bronze

    • National Lifeguard

    • Standard First Aid

  • Current Advanced Leadership Instructor certification (minimum of 1):

    • National Lifeguard Instructor certification

    • Standard First Aid Instructor certification

    • Coach Instructor certification

    • SEE Auditor Instructor certification

    • Aquatic Management Instructor certification

  • Aquafit Instructor certification (CALA, WaterArt, AQX) (preferred).

  • HIGH FIVE Quest 2 certification (preferred).

  • The successful candidate is required to travel between sites. Access to transportation to travel between work locations in a timely manner is required.
