Job summary

The University of Alberta is seeking a Recreation Facility Operator I to support the Saville Community Sports Centre West. The role covers daily operations of hardwood spaces, classrooms and team rooms, and requires flexible scheduling across days, evenings and weekends.

You will assist with bookings, safety protocols and staff supervision, ensuring high service levels for internal and external customers while maintaining equipment and facilities to a high standard.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required.
  • Undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, Recreation or Business is an asset.
  • Intermediate First Aid within 2 years is required.
  • Police Information Check required.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to provide a recent three-year driver’s abstract with limited demerits/violations.
  • Excellent communication skills are required.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a multi-purpose recreational facility is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment and event set up as directed by the supervisor and manager.
  • Performs regular hardwood maintenance.
  • Open and close procedures for Saville West facility.
  • Assist with accident/incident reporting and data collection.
  • Operate facility equipment (forklifts, floor scrubber, etc.) safely.
  • Ensure facilities are used according to policy and procedures.
  • Respond to member inquiries in a positive, professional manner.
  • Support staff with managing difficult client situations.
  • Assist onboarding and training for staff.
  • Engage casual staff during evenings and weekends.
  • Adhere to health, safety and environment policies.

Location -

This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at South Campus, Edmonton.

The Recreation Facility Operator I is critical to the overall functioning of the Saville Community Sports Centre - West facility. Assisting all operational aspects of Campus & Community Recreation (CCR) Recreation Facility Operations supports both internal and external customers providing day-to-day operational support, hardwood floor maintenance, facility monitoring, equipment maintenance, event set-up and take down, risk management, building access control, key management, and casual staff leadership during evening and weekend hours.

The Recreation Facility Operator I is one of four (4) full-time and five (5) casual staff reporting to the Recreation Facility Operator Supervisor – Saville West. The RFO I is responsible for the daily operation of Saville Community Sports Centre - West including hardwood floor spaces, classrooms and team rooms. The Operator supports the safe, efficient and positive use of sport and recreation facilities managed by CCR.

This position requires the ability to work a variable work schedule spanning 7 days a week in a rotating capacity working days, evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Equipment and event set up as directed by the RFO Supervisor – Saville West, Bookings and Events Coordinator, and/or Manager.
  • Performs regular hardwood maintenance.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures for the Saville Community Sports Centre - West as required.
  • Assist with accident/incident reporting including quality assurance of information and data collection and analysis.
  • Operate facility equipment including forklifts, boom lift, man lift, floor scrubber, etc. in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ensures appropriate use of the facilities in accordance with the CCR and University policies and procedures.
  • Responds to complaints, questions and requests from members in an expeditious, positive and professional manner and reports any concerns to Supervisor.
  • Supports staff in managing situations with difficult clients.
  • Assists with onboarding new staff and ongoing training for staff as required.
  • Interacts with and supports casual staff members in all areas of South Campus sport and recreation facilities during evenings and weekends.
  • Understands, fulfills, and promotes the health, safety and environment responsibilities identified in University policy.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma required. Undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, Recreation or Business field is an asset.
  • Intermediate First Aid (within 2 years).
  • Police Information Check required.
  • Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s license.
  • Must be able to provide a recent copy of a three-year driver’s abstract with no more than six (6) demerits and/or two (2) moving violations within the last two years.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a multi-purpose recreational facility with a specific emphasis on gymnasium spaces and event set up and take down is an asset.
  • Experience related to sport, recreation and/or event-related management is an asset.
  • Forklift operator training is an asset.
  • Fall arrest training is an asset.
  • Aerial lift training is an asset.

This position is subject to all applicable terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Governors of the University of Alberta and the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).
