Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Recreation Coordinator is responsible to create, implement, maintain & evaluate high quality therapeutic recreational, social, educational, and special events programming suitable for varying interests, cognitive abilities, and care needs for seniors in person and/or virtually.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Client Services:
- Execute the established recreation program plan as per schedule of activities encouraging participation and responding to the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being of clients.
- Engage clients in small and large group activities which correspond to the identified leisure needs, interests, and the physical and cognitive abilities of clients; demonstrate well-developed and effective group leadership skills.
- Assist clients with activities of daily living while in the program.
- Solicit feedback to ensure the effectiveness of the program schedule and implementation plans.
- Identify, develop, implement, and monitor individual assistive/augmentative communication strategies to encourage full participation in activities and programming.
- Actively participate in the client reassessment and in partnership with all relevant stakeholders, establish individual service goals for clients, identify objectives and interventions
- Assist or facilitate as required with the safe arrival and departure of clients.
- Participates in the development of program standards as stated in the Salvation Army Manual for Accreditation.
- Respond calmly and professionally in emergency situations and assist as directed; implement First Aid Training and Gentle Persuasion Approach as required.
- In accordance with Safe Food Handling principles, support the distribution of snacks, lunch and nourishments which meet the client’s individual dietary requirements for safety and preference.
- Take active measures to ensure a pleasant participant experience by setting the environment and employing a strong customer service focus during interactions.
- Remain cognizant and informed of infection prevention and control measures and abide by all applicable policy in the achievement of a healthy environment.
- Ensure all necessary arrangements and required documentation is completed for assigned programs.
- Monitors each client for ongoing changes in health and abilities and reports concerns to the Community Nurse and Program Supervisor following established processes.
Human Resources:
- Provides support and direction to casual/relief staff, volunteers, and students.
- Provide training, mentoring and orientation to new staff/volunteers/students.
Communication & Administration:
- Effectively use a variety of technological resources as a tool in the delivery of recreational programs/activities (including iPads/tablets, smart televisions, smart boards, etc.)
- Support implementation of a daily schedule for team, detailing actions and timelines for the day; maintain accurate documentation and records.
- Gather data, maintain statistics, and compile information for reports as required; develop and maintain an up- to- date resource files.
- Report any actual or potential problems/situations/particular needs to the Program Supervisor or designate.
- Complete and submit detailed incident reports within the established timeframes.
- Monitor and respond to internal email correspondence regularly.
- Participate in the development of departmental policies and procedures.
Property:
- Report any property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment and/or repairs needed in the program as per policy.
Health & Safety
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all COVID-19 protocols and requirements.
- Use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.
- Responsible to follow through on all safety and security procedures (including fire) as outlined in the policy and procedures manual.
- Maintain sanitation and proper health, and safety standards of hygiene while performing duties.
General:
- Uphold all Salvation Army policies, directives, and operating guidelines as contained in the Policy Manual of The Salvation Army London Village; comply with all associated legislation.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Assist the ADP Program Director, Program Supervisor, and coworkers in creating and maintaining a high quality, client focused, community program suitable for providing varying levels of care to program participants.
- Demonstrate commitment to relationship-centered care.
- Provide coverage for other staff during absences.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of Alzheimer Disease and related dementias and community resources.
- Maintain regular attendance at team meetings, actively participate in team discussion/decision-making.
- Participate in client specific and/or program specific training and professional development as required.
Perform other position related duties as required.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP CENTRED MANAGEMENT:
Internal relationships:
- Corps Officer, Leadership, coworkers, students, volunteers.
- Mandatory attendance at scheduled staff meetings and training events.
- Represent the Adult Day Program on internal committees as appropriate.
External Relationships:
- Community, program clients and their families.
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY :
- This position reports directly to the Adult Day Program Supervisor or designate.
PROPERTY, FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Receive, receipt, and secure all payments for services.
- Responsible for recommending/supporting the ordering, purchasing, organization and maintenance of recreation program supplies/equipment.
- Independently perform start of day/end of day routines in accordance with established daily & weekly checklists.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent part-time position based on 7 hours per week with the possibility of additional casual relief hours.
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program need; schedule includes days and weekends.
- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position.
- Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling, walking, and standing for long period; some kneeling, running may be required.
Normal hours of work:Every other Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and includes a 1/2 hour paid meal break where applicable.
Normal location of work: 1340 Dundas Street, London ON N5W 3B6
Hourly Rate: $23.90 per hour

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a College Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, or related area of study.
- Fluent French verbal and written communication skills preferred.
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) training preferred.
- Must provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
- NOTE: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired/frail elderly populations.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet; ability to successfully interact with iPads/tablets and Smart Boards.
- Montessori for Dementia Care Certification, U-First Training and R/TRO designation would be assets.
- Musical skills are an asset
- Interest and previous experience or skills in crafts, music, art, fitness, etc.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $21.83 to $27.29 with a maximum of $32.75.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
