Title: Recreation Coordinator
Location: Community YMCA, 2269 Gottingen Street
Position Status: Full-Time, Term (8 weeks)
Compensation: $18.00 per hour
About The Role
The Community Y is seeking an energetic and motivated Recreation Coordinator to lead and organize recreational programs for youth in our community. This dynamic role requires an individual who is passionate about sports, youth engagement, and community building. The Recreation Coordinator will be responsible for planning, leading, and facilitating a variety of drop-in sports and recreational activities, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, and more, during evenings and weekends. Additionally, this role will involve collaborating with our program team to offer diverse activities, including special events like recreation programming at a local park, and taking programming outside to local community basketball courts.
In This Role, You Will
- Program Planning & Development: Design, plan, and organize recreational programs for youth, including sports like basketball, soccer, volleyball, and other drop-in activities. Create schedules for programs and events, ensuring there are a variety of activities for different age groups and skill levels.
- Program Leadership & Facilitation: Lead and facilitate recreational activities and sports programs during evenings and weekends. Supervise participants, ensuring a safe and positive environment for all involved. Provide instruction and guidance during activities to enhance participant engagement and skill development.
- Community Engagement & Collaboration: Collaborate with program team members to offer diverse and innovative recreational opportunities.
- Event Coordination: Organize and manage special events, such as recreation programs at local parks and outdoor community basketball games. Oversee event logistics, including coordinating volunteers, equipment, and facility use.
- Safety & Risk Management: Ensure all activities are conducted in a safe environment, following safety protocols and guidelines. Address any participant issues or concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Program Promotion & Outreach: Promote recreational programs through various channels, including social media, flyers, and local outreach efforts. Encourage participation by creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for youth of all backgrounds.
- Equipment & Facility Management: Oversee the maintenance and organization of sports equipment and program supplies. Coordinate the use of indoor and outdoor spaces, including local basketball courts, parks, and community centers.
- Evaluation & Reporting: Track program participation, collect feedback from participants, and assess the success of the programs. Prepare reports on program outcomes and provide recommendations for improvements.
- Youth Development & Mentorship: Foster a supportive and encouraging environment that promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth. Serve as a role model and mentor to youth participants, encouraging positive behavior and community involvement.
- Administrative Tasks: Maintain accurate records of program attendance, incidents, and other relevant data. Assist with budgeting, funding, and resource allocation for recreation programs.
- Other duties as required.
Education And Skills Qualifications
- Knowledge in teaching or leadership one or all of the following; Children’s Programming, Running Events, Special Events, Recreation or Sports
- Enrollment in Post-Secondary is an asset; Education, Recreation, Kinesiology, Community Development or related program.
- Experience working with children and families in an outdoor recreational or community event setting.
- Event Coordination experience or lesson planning an asset.
- Community networking skills or related experience.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural communication skills to work with youth, parents, and staff
- Demonstrated ability to meet multiple, competing deadlines and priorities
- Strong attention to detail
- Access to a reliable vehicle to travel or reliable transportation to various community locations
- Flexibility to work outside of regular work hours on an as-needed basis
- Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
- First Aid & CPR certification is a condition of employment
