The City of Ontario's Recreation & Community Services Department has an exciting opportunity for a Recreation / Community Services Driver. Under general supervision, the Recreation / Community Services Driver performs work in the operation of a vehicle to ensure the safe transportation of passengers to and from various destinations.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about serving the community, has excellent problem solving and navigational skills and a keen sense of direction, including knowledge of mapping software. The successful incumbent with have experience in the operation of a passenger van or bus. Additionally, the successful candidate will embody the Department's mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the values of the City's Approach to Public Service - Commitment to the Community, Excellence through Teamwork, and Doing the Right Thing the Right Way.

This recruitment will result in an eligibility list, which will be used to fill full-time and part-time vacancies within this classification. If part-time opportunities arise, part-time employees may be scheduled to work up to 29 hours per week and are not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans. The current vacancies are for one (1) full-time Recreation and Community Services Driver and four (4) part-time Recreation and Community Services Driver Trainees.

Examples Of Essential Functions

The following essential functions are typically performed by the Recreation / Community Services Driver classification :

  • Operates passenger van / bus to transport passengers and / or those with disabilities to and from various destinations in a safe and timely manner.
  • Receives daily driving assignments and schedules; makes modifications to routes as directed, based on customer cancelations, transfers, no shows or change of service needs.
  • Assists passengers in the safe loading and unloading from the vehicle, including pushing and pulling wheelchairs, assisting with and securing packages, walkers, wheelchairs and other assistive devices and / or personal belongings.
  • Operates wheelchair lift in a safe manner if vehicle is so equipped.
  • Performs vehicle inspections prior to operation and basic safety and preventive maintenance functions to ensure the safe operating condition of assigned vehicle, and to ensure compliance with mandated guidelines.
  • Maintains vehicle by cleaning and washing vehicle's interior and exterior, and checking and maintaining fuel and other basic automotive fluid levels.
  • Ensures vehicles are safely and securely stored.
  • Reports vehicle defects or maintenance concerns to supervisor.
  • Practices safe driving techniques; establishes and ensures a safe environment for passengers.
  • Prepares, completes and submits daily reports, driver trip manifests, accident / citizen incident forms and other trip statistics such as mileage, fees collected, and number of daily passengers served.
  • Operates a phone, computer or other electronic devices including applications and / or software to include computerized navigation systems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

In Addition To The Above, Functions May Also Include

  • Assists in the planning of efficient routes and maintains daily route schedules.
