JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Long-Term Care Manager, the Recreation Assistant is responsible for leading and/or assisting in program planning, organizing, and implementing recreation and leisure programs for the residents of the Extended Care Wing. Recreation programs are to be appropriate and relevant to individual client needs, interests and abilities. The purpose of this position is to have service continuity in the event of an extended absence of the Recreation Coordinator or to meet existing needs. The hours for this position are on an as needed basis. Coverage of the Full-Time Recreation Coordinator will be at the discretion of the Nurse Manager and will depend on the length of absence of the Full-Time Recreation Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology or other related field is considered an asset (or enrolled in a community college or university in a diploma or degree program in such a field).
  • Education or experience related to the field of Gerontology.
  • Experience working in Long-Term Care or with the geriatric population.
  • Certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Mandatory Covid-19 vaccination.

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources.
  • Experience with mentoring and teaching team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing environments.
  • Experience in program development.
  • Must have the physical strength, flexibility, and endurance to perform the role.
  • Computer literacy for windows applications and documentation software.
