Job summary

Extendicare is seeking a Recreation Aide to assist in planning, organizing and delivering meaningful programs for residents in our long-term care setting.

You will support activity planning, maintain records, and communicate with residents, families, and staff while upholding the organization’s ethics and values. A Diploma in Recreation/Leisure or Gerontology is required, along with experience with seniors and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • College diploma in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Gerontology or equivalent is required.
  • Previous experience working with seniors is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • An energetic, compassionate person who enjoys working with the elderly.
  • Valid provincial driver’s license to transport residents by van (Class 4; Class F).
  • Must provide a Vulnerable Sector Check (within six months) or be willing to obtain one.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, organization and implementation of meaningful programs for the residents, in collaboration with the Recreation Manager & Executive Director.
  • Assist with maintenance of department records including assessments, evaluations of planned programs and participation.
  • Maintain effective communication with residents, families, volunteers and staff; inform them of events.
  • Attend in-service education on current trends in elder care.
  • Participate in team meetings to plan programs aligned with residents’ interests.
  • Facilitate residents to scheduled and pre-arranged outings.
  • Assist with assessment of resident activity levels.
  • Prepare, carry out and evaluate daily activities.
  • Assist with meal services as required.
  • Work in a position of trust with vulnerable adults; uphold ethics and integrity.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Job Description Mission: Reporting to the Recreation Manager, the Recreation Aide assists in the planning, organization and implementation of meaningful programs for the residents.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the planning, organization and implementation of meaningful programs for the residents, in collaboration with the Recreation Manager & Executive Director;
  • Assists with the maintenance of appropriate department records including assessments, evaluations of planned programs detailing individual participation, charting;
  • Maintains effective communication and good human relations with residents, families, volunteers and staff of other departments, keeping them informed of current and upcoming events;
  • Attends in-service education in order to keep informed of current trends in the total care of the elderly;
  • Participates in team meetings to plan programs with residents' interest in mind;
  • Facilitating residents to scheduled and pre-arranged outings;
  • Assisting with assessment of individual resident activity levels;
  • Preparing, carrying out and evaluating daily activities;
  • Assisting with meal services as required;
  • Work in a position of trust with vulnerable adults (residents);
  • Uphold and promote the organization's values and philosophy relating particularly to ethics, morality, and integrity as set out in Extendcare's Code of Conduct;
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
