Qualifications

• High school diploma required; must be enrolled in Therapeutic Recreation Diploma program.
• Prior experience with MDS coding and knowledge of geriatric care desirable.

Job description

Qualifications

High school diploma required. Must be enrolled in the Therapeutic Recreation Diploma program or have a post-secondary certificate related to Therapeutic Recreation. Prior experience with MDS coding and care planning desirable. Knowledge and/or experience working with the geriatric population. Ability to read and write English as well as to understand verbal and written instructions in English. Demonstrates independence, initiative, resourcefulness, creativity, sound judgment and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate effectively with other staff, residents, families, the public and volunteers. Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and complete assignments in a timely manner. Mentally and physically able to perform duties as well as maintaining regular attendance. Computer and technology literacy as required. Complete all education as required by Extendicare.

Duties And Responsibilities

1. Participates in the planning, organizing, implementing and evaluation of recreational programs based on the needs, interests and abilities of those Residents following assessments.
2. Maintains appropriate records of planned programs and attendance as they relate to individual residents. Other related records include: cleaning checklists and communication documents.
3. Actively encourages residents to attend programs by assisting them to events and coordinating with volunteers as needed.
4. Assists residents with activities of daily living, which may include after meal cleaning, transporting, preparation for outings, etc.
5. Plans and implements therapeutic exercise programs, in consultation and collaboration with rehab team.
6. Accompanies and supervises residents on outings; i.e. museums, picnics, botanic gardens, etc.
7. Sets up and cleans areas where programs are held, including decorating to suit the occasion, involving residents as much as possible.
8. Responsible for assistance in training, supervising, and evaluating volunteers and Recreation students in the home.
9. Performs all duties in accordance with the written policies and procedures of Extendicare, the facility, and the Recreation Department.
10. Performs all duties in a manner that is safe, protects themselves and others, and in-line with Extendicare’s OH&S policies and programs in addition to provincial regulations and laws.
11. Performs duties in accordance with prescribed sanitation and infection control procedures.
12. Respects residents’ rights to dignity and privacy and performs duties in a courteous and respectful manner.
13. Adheres to “Standards of Employee Conduct”, “Commitment to Residents”, “Bill of Rights”, and “Extendicare Quality Care Standards” as well as the Mission, Vision and Values of Extendicare.
14. Works closely and cooperates with other staff and residents. Maintains good working relationships with other departments.
15. Participates in committees, meetings, education in-services as required.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned.
