Site : Hydro Place - 700 University Avenue

Department : Ethics Support Services

Reports to : Executive Vice President Science and Research

Shifts : Monday-Friday

Status : 12 month appointment renewable

Position Summary

The REB oversees all research involving humans conducted under the auspices of UHN and is vested with the responsibility and authority to approve recommend modifications to reject or terminate any proposed or ongoing research involving humans conducted by researchers at the UHN. The REB is also delegated the authority to review and approve amendments to monitor reports of serious adverse events and significant protocol deviations and to conduct continuing reviews on all approved research studies.

The position of Chair plays a vital role in :

  • Safeguarding participants : Ensuring high ethical standards for all human research at UHN protecting participants and enabling responsible research practices.
  • Fostering innovation : Championing a collaborative review process streamlining access to leading-edge research for patients.
  • Enhancing research quality : Guiding a team of experts in rigorous ethics reviews fostering a collaborative culture of continuous improvement.

Duties

Shape a Thriving Research Ecosystem :

  • Ensure the appropriate review of biomedical research involving humans submitted to the Oncolgy panel(s) at UHN
  • Cultivate a dynamic environment of collaboration transparency and continuous improvement within the REB
  • Provide consultation on process flow and work with REB Operations on continuous quality improvement
  • Recommend Vice-Chairs and delegate tasks to build a strong supportive REB leadership structure

Qualifications :

  • PhD MD and / or regulated healthcare professional or equivalent expertise in bioethics. Typically an MD licensed in Ontario with experience conducting greater-than minimal risk biomedical research on human subjects
  • Previous experience as a REB Member or REB Chair / Vice Chair is an asset
  • Proven experience conducting human research with a deep understanding of research study design
  • Experience in optimizing organizational workflows / operational processes in research preferred
  • A collaborative visionary who thrives on building bridges between researchers clinicians and partners
  • Working knowledge of local national and international regulations guidelines and policies with a keen eye for navigating complex regulations and policies.
