Job description

Simpson Ranching is seeking a self-motivated, reliable Ranch Hand to join our team in the Alberta Foothills on our 1,000 Head Cattle Ranch and Mixed Grain Farm. We are looking for a long-term employee who has strong experience in all aspects of ranch work, including equipment operation, facility maintenance, and cattle handling and care. A minimum of 5 years’ experience and a clean Class 5 license are required. We offer a competitive wage, bonus program, housing, and other benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Ranch Hand with Simpson Ranch, you will:

1. Carry out field work such as haying, harvesting, cultivating, harrowing, spraying thistle, and rock picking.
2. Operate equipment including lawn mowers, weed whackers, pressure washers, post pounders, and other tools safely, following SRL Environmental, Health and Safety Manual guidelines.
3. Maintain and service equipment used for haying, feeding, bedding, weed control, and general ranch operations, including record keeping.
4. Participate in pasture doctoring cattle, approximately one day per week, depending on the season.
5. Perform cattle care tasks such as detecting and treating illness, feeding, calving, and livestock handling according to SRL standards.
6. Care for horses, including grooming, stall cleaning, feeding, and health treatments.
7. Assist with other ranch duties such as fence repair, water system maintenance, barn cleaning, livestock movement, and snow shoveling.
8. Maintain cleanliness and good repair of all ranch areas.
9. Perform any additional duties as required by management to uphold ranch standards.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you should have:

1. At least 2 years of experience in a large ranching operation.
2. Knowledge of cattle health and handling skills are assets.
3. Mechanical skills for servicing farm/ranch equipment.
4. Ability to operate farming and ranch equipment.
5. Skills in building and repairing fences and corrals.
6. Willingness to assist with farm division tasks when needed.
7. Experience with operating various tools such as lawn mowers, weed whackers, etc.
8. Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract; Class 1 is an asset.
9. Willingness to work long hours when necessary.
10. Reliability and trustworthiness.
