Job summary

Hitachi Rail Canada Inc. is seeking a Senior RAM Specialist to join the RAM Engineering team in Toronto. You will perform RAM design, analyses and modeling for CBTC systems, ensuring reliability and safety in collaboration with the design team.

Under guidance from senior engineers, you may lead RAM activities for projects, conduct FMECA/FTA analyses, and contribute to RAM program planning and lifecycle cost studies. This role is on-site in Toronto.

Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of electronic components and circuits.
  • Experience in RAM concepts and analyses is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of RAM design, reliability and maintainability principles.

Responsibilities

  • Provides RAM engineering expertise and analysis for Hitachi Rail CBTC systems.
  • Performs RAM design, analyses, modeling and simulation to verify RAM is built into system design.
  • Represents RAM in technical meetings and influences design decisions affecting RAM.
  • Performs FMECA/FTA at subsystem and system levels to identify single failure points.
  • Prepares RAM Program Plans and supports Life Cycle Cost analyses.
  • Performs RAM apportionments and maintenance/diagnostic capability assessments.
  • Reviews hardware designs for RAM compliance and participates in design reviews.

Job Description

The Senior RAM Specialist will report directly to the RAM Engineering Manager and work with the RAM team in performing RAM activities and will work collaboratively with other design team members in making sure that RAM is built-in to the system design ensuring compliance with all contractual RAM requirements.

The Senior RAM Specialist will also work under the guidance and mentorship of more senior team members to learn and perform RAM Engineering tasks and activities for CBTC systems. He/she will also be assigned as RAM Lead for a project with the support from other RAM team members.

Key Accountabilities
  • Provides RAM engineering expertise and analysis in the development and implementation of Hitachi Rail CBTC system.
  • Performs RAM design, analyses, modeling and simulation to specify and verify train control systems developed at Hitachi Rail are reliable and safe to operate.
  • Represents RAM in technical meetings involving RAM-related issues. Participate in, influence, and approve design decisions impacting or potentially impacting RAM.
  • Analyzes and evaluates hardware designs to verify compliance with contractual Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) requirements.
  • Evaluates and identifies RAM problems and suggests design alternatives (i.e., redundancy, reliable components, preventive & corrective maintenance, diagnostic capabilities, etc.) where appropriate to enhance the RAM of the subsystem or system.
  • Prepares Reliability, Availability, Maintainability (RAM) Program Plan that defines the RAM objectives and tasks to be performed, and deliverables to be produced at various phases of the project.
  • Performs Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and/or Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) at subsystem and system level to identify all single failure points that are critical to operational success of the system.
  • Performs Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability apportionments to ensure hardware is being designed to meet contractual requirements.
  • Performs Spare Analysis and identify recommended spare parts list to support the system maintenance during warranty period.
  • Provides RAM calculated data to support Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis that will predict the total cost of utilizing the CBTC (Communications Based Train Control) system through its entire life span.
  • Performs MTBF calculations based on field returns to support Quality Assurance (Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) process) and participates in FRB meetings.
  • Evaluates the Reliability, Availability and Maintainability of designs and design changes for hardware by reviewing technical specifications, design & Engineering Change Control documentation.
  • Provides evaluations & recommendations with respect to Reliability, Availability and Maintainability in formal design reviews and by raising Change Requests (CRs) against any RAM issues.
  • Evaluates the Reliability of designs and design changes for hardware by reviewing technical specifications, design & Engineering Change Control documentation.
  • Performs peer review of key RAM deliverables and artifacts including hardware design documents and maintenance manuals.
Key Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
  • Must have a basic knowledge in electronic components and circuits
  • Minimum 5-10 years relevant experience in system architecture for complex systems, application of RAMS concepts & analyses techniques.
  • Good command of the English language, both written and oral
  • Computer skills, MS Office; DOORS; ClearQuest, SAP are assets
Preferred Qualifications
  • (Optional) Member of Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO) or Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE)
  • Knowledge of railway systems is an asset
  • Knowledge of RAM principles and methodologies are assets

Base Salary : $89,888 – $115,424
