Job summary

CPKC is hiring a Conductor in Edmonton to join a safety-focused team operating in a union environment. The role involves switching rail cars, moving trains in yards, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Expect unscheduled shifts, long hours, and potential career growth into Yard Foreperson or Locomotive Engineer. Training is provided with a detailed program and strict safety practices to follow.

Qualifications

• Must be able to perform physically demanding work.
• Willingness to work unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 operating environment.
• Long shifts up to 12 hours including days/evenings/nights/weekends/holidays.
• Be able to report to work within a two hour call window after rest period.
• Excellent focus, attention to detail and ability to multitask.
• Strong communication skills, including radio instructions.
• Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions for long periods.
• Must read and understand safety instructions, operating rules and other printed material in English.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or GED as minimum education.

Responsibilities

• Work in train or yard service depending on seniority.
• Carry out instructions detailing a train's route and movements.
• Coordinate switching of cars and uncoupling operations.
• Interpret and relay signals affecting train movement.
• Signal crew and manage engine/train movement via radio.
• Follow GCOR and general orders and bulletins.
• Provide flag protection and relay signals in emergencies.
• Move on/off moving or stationary equipment.
• Complete forms and reports with clear handwriting.
• Handle emergencies and operate fire extinguishers; apply first aid.
