Job description

At Baylis Medical Technologies, we are dedicated to developing innovative medical devices that improve patients' lives. Our R&D team plays a vital role in designing, testing, and commercializing groundbreaking technologies for minimally invasive procedures. As an R&D Engineer with a specialization in polymer materials science for medical devices, you will help develop and optimize the surface properties to enhance product performance and reliability.

Impact Through Innovation

  • Act as subject matter expert on areas related to polymer material properties including coating methods and chemistries, selection of materials, and troubleshooting of processing methods.
  • Design, execute, and monitor test results and perform standard verifications, reporting all non-conformities and shifts in performance.
  • Own all coating-related processes, internally and externally, including optimization of existing processes, polymer selection for surfaces to be coated, prototyping changes, etc.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify surface requirements, implement solutions that meet design specifications and troubleshoot unexpected problems.
  • Conduct testing, analysis, and validation of coatings and polymers on various surfaces and substrates to ensure performance and compliance with relevant standards.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize surface characteristics (coating, materials selection, additives, etc.) to achieve consistent results and scalability for manufacturing.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including protocols, reports, and regulatory submissions.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and emerging materials related to polymer chemistry, materials, and coatings.
  • Collaborate to determine the root cause of defects and non-performance and resolve the issues at the team level.
  • Troubleshoot errors with lab equipment and work collaboratively to continuously improve the testing procedures.
Required Skills:
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Materials Science (including Polymer Chemistry), Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in developing and applying surface modification techniques for medical devices or highly regulated industries.
  • Proficiency in characterization techniques for evaluating coating performance (e.g., adhesion testing, surface analysis, particulate analysis).
  • Technical proficiency in polymer materials selection, modifications, characterization, and testing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical presentations and documentation.
Asset Skills:
  • Experience with regulatory standards and quality systems for medical devices (ISO 13485, FDA requirements).
  • Knowledge of various coating technologies and surface modification techniques.
  • Familiarity with catheter-based devices or disposable medical products.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
