About the Company

Flutter Care is a medtech company dedicated to improving maternal and fetal health outcomes through innovative, human-centered technology. We are on a mission to promote joy and connection throughout the perinatal period and improve health outcomes. Flutter Care supports expectant individuals with tools to make informed decisions and advocate for their health. We are backed by top accelerators including the Canadian Hardware Catalyst Initiative and Techstars Industries of the Future. Flutter Care has been recognized by The Globe and Mail, BC Business, Glory Professional, FemTech Analytics and more.

About the Role

Flutter Care is seeking an enthusiastic R&D Biomedical Electronics Engineer to join our team, and play a pivotal role in the development of our wearable health technology aimed at transforming maternal and fetal care. The candidate would help shape the electronic architecture within a high-impact cross-functional role. The candidate will drive the design and development of our electronics subsystems – including sensor development, custom PCB Design, board bring-up, and embedded firmware decisions.

The R&D Biomedical Electronics Engineer will collaborate with a cross-disciplinary (i.e., Firmware, Software, Systems) engineering team to translate user needs and requirements into manufacturable designs. Your contributions will directly influence the product’s usability and performance in real-world healthcare settings. This position requires hands-on ownership and appreciation for regulated development cycles.

Responsibilities

  • Electronic System Architecture: Define and iterate on the hardware architecture of the wearable, selecting components for reliability, power efficiency and manufacturability.
  • Sensor Performance Evaluation and Optimization: Conduct hands-on testing and in-depth analysis of sensor systems to evaluate performance, drive iterative improvements, and optimize accuracy and reliability.
  • PCB Design and Revision: Lead and support PCB schematic capture, layout, and design revisions across product generations.
  • Board Bring-up and Debugging: Perform board bring-up, validation, and debugging of new hardware revisions and electronic assemblies
  • Electronic System Architecture:
  • Prototyping, Testing and Manufacturing: Support prototype builds, test fixture development and interface with manufacturing partners and/or suppliers during product development.
  • Firmware Collaboration: Contribute to embedded firmware development and troubleshooting where applicable.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineering team to co-develop testable, integrated prototypes that are aligned with system constraints
  • Documentation and Traceability: Generate and maintain detailed design documentation, test reports & plans and hardware documentation, including BOMs and design files.
  • Design Assurance and Review: Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and verification/validation activities.
  • Regulatory Support: Ensure designs comply with relevant medical device and safety standards (e.g., IEC 60601, ISO 14971, ISO 13485).
  • Usability and Human Factors: Incorporate user-centric design principles to optimize hardware layout and interaction in clinical environments.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical, Electronics or Computer Engineering or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in electronics design and development, ideally in a startup or R&D intensive environment.
  • Proven experience designing and debugging custom PCBs for embedded systems, including the use of EDA tools (e.g., Altium Designer or equivalent).
  • Hands-on experience with PCB bring-up, including soldering surface-mount and through-hole components.
  • Proficient in using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, soldering irons, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly prototype and creatively problem-solve hardware challenges.
  • Working knowledge of embedded firmware (C/C++) and microcontroller-based systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with a strong interest in technical research and continuous improvement.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively, with a structured approach to goal setting and progress tracking aligned with team objectives.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working in a regulated industry—ideally in medical devices or health technology.
  • Experience in wearable device development from prototype to product in-market.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., IEC 60601, ISO 13485, ISO 14971).
  • Knowledge of wireless protocols (e.g., BLE, Wi-Fi) and low-power system design.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams in startups or agile development environments.
  • Strong understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and usability principles.
