APPLICATION DEADLINE: Wednesday, February 7th, 2024
The Department of Physics, Engineering Physics, and Astronomy offers a combined program of a BScH/MSc (Physics). This program provides undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct summer research between their 3rd and 4th years. In the 4th year of their Honours program (Physics), students can take up to 2 graduate-level Physics courses, enabling them to enter the graduate program with advanced standing. Research initiated as an undergraduate can serve as a foundation for the graduate thesis, potentially allowing exceptional students to complete their graduate degree within 4 terms.
Applicants should send a cover letter, CV, and a recent transcript via email to the contact person for each experiment of interest. Successful candidates will have strong academic records in Physics, Engineering Physics, Chemistry, or related fields, along with relevant research experience. Students eligible for NSERC, USRA, or other fellowships are highly encouraged to apply.
KDK+ is a new experiment measuring a rare decay of 40K. It offers opportunities for accelerated master's students to work on hardware, simulations, and analysis.

These large-scale liquid argon experiments utilize the unique properties of liquid argon scintillation to search for rare dark matter interactions. DEAP, based at SNOLAB, has already collected three years of data. DarkSide is a next-generation experiment, the first to fully instrument its detector with Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). Opportunities include data analysis, assisting with data-taking, and simulating/testing the data acquisition system at TRIUMF. Students can also gain hands-on experience with a small cryostat facility at Queen’s to measure properties of detector materials.
