Quality Scientist I – Calibration (12 month Contract)

This position reports to Quality Laboratory Manager and is based at Guelph, Ontario Canada.

What you will do

The Quality Scientist I - Calibration is responsible for:

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Calibration:

  • Complete all assigned calibrations daily, in accordance with internal team standards, GMP’s, safety requirements and applicable procedures.
  • Review calibration records for accuracy, strict adherence to applicable procedures and closure of all associated investigations prior to equipment release.
  • Actively participate in team and department/project meetings, and daily communication with team members and partners to bring up issues, manage requests and provide technical expertise.
  • Independently generate system reports (Non-Conformances, Near Miss/Accident Reports, Change Controls) as required.
  • Review all assigned PM/Calibration logs to ensure they are complete, accurate and that any issues/gaps are highlighted immediately to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Identify, report, and seek correction for deviations noted in the workplace. Assume ownership/leadership of deviations and corrective/preventative actions.
  • Assist in handling the disposal of chemicals in accordance with current EHS requirements and internal practices.
  • Maintain and create CMMS (i.e. Maximo) records.
  • Take ownership for repairs of failed calibration equipment and ensure timely release back into use.

Process/Cost Improvements:

  • Provide technical guidance and maintenance insights.
  • Exercise individual initiative and effort to continually evaluate equipment performance, increase self-proficiency through individual study effort, and review of available technical data.
  • Perform regular assessment and lead/assist in implementation of innovative ways to continuously improve processes, ensure maximal equipment uptime and reduce overall calibration costs.
  • Identify technical risks of failure/damage within area of responsibility (i.e. Laboratory) and advance as appropriate.
  • Identify and assist with opportunities for cross-functional team and end user training.
  • Ensure sourcing of calibration supplies, test equipment, scheduling and coordination/shipping with external vendors are completed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate service purchase order creation activities with internal partners.
  • Responsible for on-site contractor safety training and adherence to safe practices.

What we are looking for

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or related program.
  • At least one year of related experience.
  • Previous experience in a Laboratory or Quality Assurance.
  • Proven experience with Equipment Qualification, technical writing and use of formal troubleshooting tools is required.
  • Strong consideration will be given to candidates with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs.
  • Prior experience with a food, water or pharmaceutical laboratory would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices and Good Documentation Practices.
