Job description

We’re hiring Quality Manager to join a leading railcar leasing and maintenance company in Red Deer, AB. They specialize in freight car solutions across North America, and are known for its strong safety culture, technical expertise, and commitment to operational excellence in the rail transportation industry. The Manager of Quality Assurance leads the quality function, ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal standards while managing the quality management system and supervising staff. They act as a technical liaison to resolve product issues, customer complaints, and audit findings. The role involves cross-functional collaboration and in-depth analysis of quality and maintenance issues. It is also a key leadership position within the senior team at the facility. What you’ll do as a Quality Manager :

  • Lead and maintain the Quality Management System to ensure compliance with GATX and regulatory standards.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of 4, including the Quality Assurance Supervisor and 3 Quality Control Leads.
  • Act as the technical liaison for customer complaints, audit findings, and car maintenance issues.
  • Oversee audits (AAR, internal, process, field operations) and drive continuous improvement.
  • Analyze inspection defects and customer rejections; implement corrective actions aligned with strategic goals.
  • Manage quality documentation including Quality Procedures, Engineering Notices, AAR Circular Letters, and Training Records.
  • Set clear performance objectives for direct reports and support their growth and skill development.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to evaluate and enhance maintenance processes.
  • Promote an inclusive, respectful, and accountable work environment.

What you’ll bring as a Quality Manager :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Operations, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 5 years’ industry experience with focus on quality (TQM, ISO 9000, M1003, SPC, etc.).
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain within 1 year : AAR Auditor, ISO 9001 Auditor, or ASQ Certified Auditor.
  • Knowledge of structured problem-solving (5 Whys, Kepner Tregoe), Lean / Six Sigma preferred.

Additional Skills and Requirements of a Quality Manager :

  • Demonstrates strong leadership, project management, and decision-making skills with effective communication across all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and experienced in collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Quality, Operations, Engineering, and Procurement.
  • Physically capable of inspecting railcars as part of hands-on responsibilities.
