Job summary

Roquette seeks a Lab Technician for our Portage la Prairie facility to analyze pea-based products and support quality control through analytical testing, data reporting, and method execution.

You will monitor equipment, assist in method development, and ensure compliance with QA standards, safety, and SOPs in a fast-paced lab environment.

Qualifications

  • Technical diploma plus 3-5 years lab experience in food or related industry.
  • B.Sc./B.A. in Chemistry, Food Science, Biology, Agriculture, Microbiology or related science preferred.
  • Experience: 2-3 years in lab performing physico-chemical analysis; 5 years would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze pea samples (raw, in-process, finished) using SOPs and SOPs.
  • Apply chemistry principles and analytical practices to improve QC and plant labs.
  • Prepare test reports and data; monitor equipment and inventory.
  • Assist in development of analytical methods and validation.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness and safety; ensure equipment calibration and maintenance.

Job description

The Role:

We are looking for our next Lab Technician within our Quality team. The Lab Technician is responsible for analyzing raw, in-process and finished pea-based products using established laboratory methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This role supports quality control and production through analytical testing, equipment monitoring, data reporting, method execution, and compliance with quality and safety requirements. The position also provides technical assistance to production by supporting analytical activities, laboratory operations, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This position is located in Portage la Prairie.

What You'll Do
  • Analyze pea samples (raw, in-process and finished products) using Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Use chemistry principles, analytical technology and practices to deliver improvement within quality control and plant production laboratories.
  • Provide consistent chemistry-based solutions and process control data.
  • Perform metrological monitoring of laboratory equipment/instruments.
  • Execute laboratory methods as established by the quality control unit.
  • Advise on areas for improvement to maximize product testing and release of results.
  • Assist in preparation of test reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.).
  • Use developed methods to provide high-quality, timely and cost-effective services.
  • Monitor quality control and sensory laboratories in orderly and workable conditions.
  • Regularly clean working areas in the main quality control laboratory.
  • Confirm laboratory equipment is maintained and functioning properly and that adequate parts and supplies are available in storage.
  • Assist in developing analytical methods, performing analyses and generating reliable test results.
  • Monitor daily technical workload, equipment maintenance and laboratory inventory.
  • Receive, log, prepare, distribute and/or retain incoming samples for analytical, microbiological, stability and sensory testing within assigned time frames.
  • Prepare and send samples to external laboratories and follow up on progress.
  • Perform analysis on inter-laboratory samples as assigned.
  • Master all analytical techniques used in the laboratory.
  • Check data accuracy before processing and review records.
  • Tabulate results in laboratory notebooks, Excel files and LIMS, as appropriate.
  • Perform and participate in sensory evaluation of finished products.
  • Prepare reagents and necessary dilutions for analytical applications.
  • Perform verification and calibration on quality control and workshop laboratory equipment, including daily monitoring and recording in SAP.
  • Manage physical samples in the sample library.
  • When required, enter finished product results authorizing product release.
  • Perform first-level maintenance on laboratory equipment (Elementar, Brabender, spectrophotometer, ICP).
  • Know and apply the provisions of the Quality Assurance system.
  • Participate in internal laboratory audits.
  • Communicate analytical data to the supervisor daily, as directed.
  • Follow safe work practices in laboratories and workshops.
  • Discuss safety issues and challenges with the Laboratory Manager.
  • Participate in improving laboratory safety.
  • Maintain reagents in locked cabinets and ensure laboratory equipment cleanliness.
Provide Technical Assistance to Production
  • Assist with the development of analytical methods when required.
  • Perform analytical testing in production workshop laboratories as directed.
  • Train to support cleaning validations as desired.
What You'll Need
Education
  • Technical diploma from a recognized college coupled with 3-5 years of laboratory experience in the food or related industry.
  • B.Sc./B.A. in Chemistry, Food Science, Biology, Agriculture, Microbiology or other related science degree is highly preferred.
Experience
  • 2-3 years of experience working in a laboratory and performing physico-chemical analysis.
  • 5 years of experience in the field would be an asset.
  • 5 years of related industrial or manufacturing laboratory experience is preferred.
