Job description

Central City Brewers and Distillers is a craft brewery in the business of developing and selling international award-winning premium craft beer and high-quality distilled spirits brewed without compromise. Based in Surrey, British Columbia, CCBD was voted Canada Best Brewery of the Year in 2010 and 2012. Its Red Racer brand has become a cult icon among craft beer enthusiasts throughout North America. Founded in 2003 as a brewpub and liquor store in downtown Surrey, CCBD celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013 with the grand opening of a brand new, 68,000 sq. ft. brewery and distillery on Bridgeview Drive. In 2019 we opened a 40,000 sq. ft. storage facility with approximately 2000 barrels of whiskey ageing in this facility. We are proud of being a local-Canadian Brewery that is currently expanding. In 2021 the company completed installation of a new canning line designated for contract manufacturing.

Job Summary

The QA Summer Student is responsible for assisting the QA team in maintaining all aspects of the quality assurance program within the facility. This includes analytical chemistry testing and packaged product testing. The primary goal of the Quality Assurance Summer Student is to assist in ensuring the quality and consistency of the products produced in our facility. This position is a contract of 3 months and reports to the Plant Manager

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform all required testing for incoming raw materials, in-process products, and packaged products.
  • Testing of in-process and finished products to ensure they meet the required chemical/physical specifications. This will include testing for alcohol content, pH, total acidity, bitterness, colour, sorbic acid, VDK, etc.
  • Testing of products during packaging to ensure they meet the required packaging specifications. This will include testing/monitoring of CO2, DO/TPO, pasteurization, can seams, and overall packaging integrity.
  • Sensory evaluation of in-process and finished products. This will include conducting daily taste panels, and assessing products for correct flavour profile as well as detecting any product that does not meet CCBD standards.
  • Maintaining open communication between the brewing/batching team, packaging team, and maintenance team to ensure that only products that meet CCBDs high standards are produced.
  • Maintaining all Quality Labs in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Participate in ongoing product and process improvement efforts.
  • Be a team player focused on meeting production, quality, and safety goals.
  • Perform project work as needed.

Qualifications/Desired Attributes

  • Laboratory experience is preferred.
  • Understanding the brewing and fermentation process is a plus.
  • Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation used in beverage analysis.
  • Sensory training and experience with off-flavour detection is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate with all levels of brewery personnel.
  • Ability to work independently or part of a team.

Education Requirements

  • Enrolment in an undergraduate or graduate science program, food science program, engineering program, brewing program, or a related field is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Requires frequent bending and long periods of standing or walking.
  • This role requires you to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and be available to respond to incidents and emergencies.
  • Physical demands require frequent manual lifting/moving of materials weighing 25kg.
