Reporting to the Supervisor, Food Services, the QGH Cook provides food services for the hospital cafeteria and patients within established guidelines, and according to the food safety standards for healthcare settings. The incumbent ensures that food production complies with food safe practice guidelines as determined by the Food Safety Code of Practice for Canada’s Foodservice Industry. The Cook is responsible for preparing all foods to be served to patients and at the cafeteria, using safe food practices. The Cook must ensure the accuracy of patient trays and be highly familiar with existing therapeutic diet orders and allergen risks. The position may also require delivering foods to patients during times of staff shortages.

The knowledge, skills, and experience required for this job are typically obtained through completion of a cooking certificate at a culinary school or “Red Seal” certification, along with at least five (5) years of cooking experience. A Food Safe Certificate or willingness to obtain one during employment is also required. Experience in a healthcare setting or equivalent is an asset. Experience in a hotel or tourism food service is also considered an asset. This is a Highly Sensitive Position; therefore, a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check are required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French. Applicants may submit their resumes in any of these languages. Fluency in more than one official language is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut, and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also assets.
