This is a highly visible position that is essential to our leadership in the Canadian reinsurance marketplace. A member of the Canadian Executive Committee, the SVP Business Development leads the team of senior associates that drives RGA's success in the Canadian market , developing strategy, tactical plans and customer service standards and ensuring their implementation. Develops effective relationships at the C-suite level, identifies and develops reinsurance treaties, negotiates reinsurance transactions with client counterparts and manages RGA's provision of services. As a successful motivator, he / she is expected to work closely with key individuals across all functions within RGA Canada along with other functions in the Americas and globally, towards the achievement of RGA Canada's vision and business plan.

Key Responsibilities / Activities :

  • You will be the voice of the client, a catalyst for sales excellence and work with your Business Developers to understand, set, prioritize & execute an effective client strategy, as well as developing and executing strategic business development plans aligned with the enterprise's growth strategies and vision.
  • Develop and sustain strong, trusting relationships with key decision makers and C-suite at existing and potential client companies, partners, vendors and other industry contacts to address their needs in a timely manner and be seen as a trusted business partner contributing to their ongoing success.
  • Lead, manage and direct the activities of the Business Development team across all product lines (Traditional & Financial Solutions), as well as the Group & New Initiatives team. Ensure that the teams are aligned with the development and execution of respective strategies and initiatives aligned with the company's key priorities, and that they work productively and collaboratively across all lines of business and functions
  • Work in a team environment, developing and encouraging a spirit of cooperation and coordination among departments in dealing with clients
  • Work closely with the Global Accounts and the Americas Financial Solutions teams to drive a coordinated, consistent approach to the market to deliver a "one RGA" experience
  • Champion RGA Canada's client planning process and focus resources by leveraging RGA's Client Engagement Framework for a coordinated approach to client interaction that is proactive and strategic
  • Understand the dynamics which impact on the profitability of the business and ensure that potential problems are discovered and addressed early
  • Monitor market developments with competitors, insurers, regulatory bodies, etc., and apply this information to develop new strategies or adjust existing ones

Identify potential business opportunities or threats,

  • Identify compliance issues
  • Ensure RGA is anticipating the effect and taking appropriate action
  • Inform interested parties (internal or external)
  • Maintain high visibility in the market by meeting with insurers & other relevant industry players, participating at industry meetings and by joining pertinent industry committees
  • Provide leadership, development opportunities and mentoring for direct reports to develop their careers with RGA, in line with RGA's culture and values. In conjunction with direct reports, establish performance measure to ensure optimal performance of associates. Liaise with peers and assist in leveraging expertise across the globe

Education and Experience :

Required

  • A minimum of 20 years of industry experience (insurance or reinsurance).
  • 10+ years or management or supervisory experience
  • A demonstrated track record in contributing to and implementing successful business strategies with bottom line financial acumen, understanding market, business and competitive patterns and trends.
  • Proven expertise in conceiving, designing and developing innovative insurance and / or reinsurance solutions.
  • Strong ability to engage clients on strategy and growth initiatives, and risk and capital management strategies
  • Exposure to financial reporting, corporate functions and / or risk management is an asset.
  • Firm understanding of the life insurance and reinsurance industry, including products, pricing, distribution, competition, treaties, practices, relevant insurance regulatory laws and tax laws and their impact on products and client company operations
  • Familiar with and comfortable working in a matrix organization

  • 5+ years reinsurance experience
  • Multiple product line and functional area experience
  • Extensive life insurance product & distribution experience
  • A recognized professional within the industry

  • Expertise to manage multiple projects and / or sub-teams simultaneously.
  • Strong customer focus with an ability to create, develop and maintain a strong team environment where an enthusiastic and positive attitude is felt by all levels.
  • Effective in presentations before groups and in managing question and answer sessions.
  • Ability to travel as required.

Compensation Range : 290,000 - 340,000

Compensation Range : 290,000 - 340,000

Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. RGA also maintains a full range of health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
