Job description

Purchasing Manager – Metals Type: In-Office, Full-Time, Permanent, Regina Saskatchewan

About Our Client

Our client is a well-established, privately held organization with a significant presence across North America and international operations in Australia and New Zealand. With a strong reputation within the manufacturing and equipment industry, the organization continues to grow through innovation, operational excellence, and a commitment to delivering high-quality products to its customers. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative procurement team and take ownership of a critical category supporting multiple product lines and manufacturing operations. The Purchasing Manager – Metals will play an important role in shaping sourcing strategies, strengthening supplier partnerships, managing contracts and pricing, and identifying opportunities to improve cost and value across the organization. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a large, complex organization while working closely with suppliers and internal teams across engineering, operations, manufacturing, and product planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Procurement & Sourcing: Develop and execute sourcing strategies for steel, aluminium, copper, and other metal commodities used throughout the organization. Analyze spend, market conditions, supplier data, and business requirements to identify opportunities for cost savings, improved value, and supply optimization. Lead sourcing initiatives, including supplier identification, evaluation, RFQs, RFPs, negotiations, and contract development. Maintain current knowledge of steel and metals markets to support competitive pricing and informed procurement decisions.

  • Supplier & Contract Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with key metal suppliers, including steel mills, service centres, and other strategic suppliers. Negotiate pricing, contracts, agreements, commercial terms, and pricing frameworks to support business objectives. Monitor supplier performance, compliance, quality, delivery, and adherence to contractual commitments. Lead supplier performance reviews and work collaboratively with suppliers to resolve issues and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Manage pricing indexes, cost recovery initiatives, and other market-driven pricing considerations.

  • Business Partnership & Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, operations, plant teams, product planning, and other internal stakeholders to understand material requirements and develop effective sourcing strategies. Provide market intelligence, supplier insights, and procurement recommendations to leadership and internal business partners. Act as the internal subject matter expert for the metals category, providing guidance on supplier capabilities, market conditions, pricing, and sourcing opportunities. Partner with internal teams to ensure sourcing and supplier strategies align with broader organizational goals.

  • Analysis & Continuous Improvement: Use spend and supplier data to identify trends, opportunities, risks, and areas for improvement. Track and report measurable financial benefits and procurement performance. Identify opportunities to improve procurement processes, supplier performance, and overall category management. Take ownership of issues and opportunities from identification through to resolution, using a practical “see it, own it, do it, solve it” approach.

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: Post‑secondary education in Supply Chain Management, Business, Finance, Engineering, or a related discipline is an asset; equivalent relevant experience will be considered. Several years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, purchasing, or supply chain, with strong knowledge of the steel and metals industry. Experience working with steel mills, service centres, metal suppliers, or similar organisations is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of both raw and processed metal products, including plate, coil, HSS, weldments, profiles, and other metal components. Demonstrated experience with supplier negotiations, contracts, agreements, pricing, and supplier relationship management.

  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of steel and metals markets, supplier networks, pricing, and market trends. Experience with strategic sourcing, category management, RFQs/RFPs, contract management, and supplier performance. Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret spend, pricing, and supplier data. Experience with Power BI, Baan, or similar systems is an asset.

Key Competencies

  • Strong negotiation and relationship‑building skills with the ability to be appropriately assertive while maintaining positive supplier relationships.

  • Collaborative team player who is comfortable working cross‑functionally with engineering, operations, manufacturing, and product planning teams.

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a practical, solutions‑focused approach.

  • Highly organized and able to independently manage and take ownership of a critical procurement category.

  • Adaptable and comfortable working in a changing environment.

  • Demonstrated “see it, own it, do it, solve it” mindset.
