Job description

POSITION : PUBLIC WORKS Operator (Handyman “A”) Temporary Full-Time

REPORTING TO : Public Works Sub Foreman

HOURS OF WORK : 36 hours per week, as assigned

SALARY : $32.40 / hour, as per collective agreement

Under the supervision of the Public Works Sub Foreman, the Public Works Operator is responsible for maintaining roads and sidewalks, and assisting with the maintenance of municipal Water Distribution and Wastewater systems.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Winter Control Operations (snow plowing, removal, sanding)
  • Roads and drainage maintenance
  • Operate departmental vehicles and equipment
  • Assist other departments with general labour tasks, including cemetery work, municipal property maintenance, landfill site maintenance, and water / wastewater system repairs
  • Garage work and cleanup
  • Minor welding, electrical, mechanical duties, and carpentry
  • Record daily work in log books and HOS
  • Ensure safety for self and others
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position

REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12 or equivalent; good verbal, reading, and writing skills
  • Valid DZ Driver’s license (AZ considered an asset)
  • Knowledge of trade standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation guidelines, municipal policies
  • Experience with construction equipment (backhoes, loaders, excavators, tandem trucks, graders)
  • Experience operating snowplows and sanding equipment
  • Experience with water and wastewater systems is an asset
  • Physical ability to perform the duties
  • C.P.R., First Aid, WHMIS certification
  • Basic electrical, mechanical, chemical knowledge
  • Ability to operate power tools and maintain vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to work independently or in a team
  • Courteous interaction with the public
  • Adaptability to changing conditions
  • Ability to work long hours during emergencies, outdoors in extreme weather
  • Availability after hours, weekends, and on-call rotation
