Job description

This is a temporary full-time position, working 40 hours per week from May to August.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, this position will be responsible for operating and maintaining light duty equipment and hand tools safely. This position will perform tasks including painting curbs and crosswalks and assisting with minor infrastructure repairs and replacements. The work performed includes supporting utility operations and general housekeeping of facilities, ensuring all equipment and public spaces are maintained in good working order. This position works closely with the Public Works Worker II.

WORK RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide excellent customer service by using good public relations skills.
  • Foster good relations with other staff, management, and the public.
  • Assist with operating appropriate public works equipment, and perform public works related duties in accordance with the manufacturer’s operator manuals, Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and Town safety policies.
  • Maintain public works equipment, ensuring the equipment is kept secure, clean, and in good working order.
  • Assist with general housekeeping as required (main shop and PME storage).
  • Assist Public Works Worker II to perform labourer duties including, but not limited to, painting curbs, fire hydrants, road lines, parking stalls, crosswalks, and weed whipping.
  • Assist Public Works Worker II in repairing and replacing:
  1. Solid waste bins;
  2. Signage;
  3. Minor sidewalk repairs;
  4. Asphalt pothole patching;
  5. Crack sealing;
  6. Assessment of sidewalk and asphalt conditions.
  • Work with Utility Labourer, as required, to:
  1. Assist with housekeeping duties at all the reservoirs, pump houses, lift stations, and the public workshop.
  2. Assist with sewer flushing, hydrant flushing, and valve turning operations as directed.
  3. Assist in water and sewer repairs as directed.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience working in a labourer and/or maintenance role is preferred.
  • Mechanical ability to perform basic painting and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of computers and systems including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate.
  • Satisfactory background screening is required for this position including a Criminal Record Check, and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • A Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Hours

Able to work evenings and weekends as required.

Physical Effort

Must possess the agility, strength, and physical stamina to perform arduous and prolonged work under adverse and strenuous conditions. Frequent standing. Varying levels of physical effort, including moderate to heavy lifting, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching, carrying. Operation and use of required tools and equipment skillfully and safely.

Travel

Significant travel under various road and weather conditions. Must maintain alertness and respond appropriately using defensive driving skills in various conditions (traffic, weather, distractions).

Work Environment

Moderate exposure to an office environment, significant exposure to a recreational and/or cultural area designated for public use. Moderate to significant exposure to the public in a service provision capacity. Potential exposure to client volatility dealing with the public.
