Job description

The Public Relations Manager is responsible for leading the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton (SACE)’s communications strategy to support its mission, mandate, and programs. This role is ideal for a public relations professional with a passion for ending sexual violence, a strategic mindset, and strong storytelling skills.

The Public Relations Manager is under the supervision of the Director of Community Engagement and forms part of the Community and Agency Development team within the Community Engagement (CE) department. This position reports to the Director of Community Engagement and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

SACE is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that supports children, youth and adults who have experienced sexual abuse or assault and educates the public about sexual violence. All work for SACE will reflect themission, vision, and philosophical beliefs of the organization.

SACE offers a friendly and warm work environment with a four-day work week (Monday to Thursday).

Responsibilities include:

Communications Strategy:

  • Create, maintain, deliver, and evaluate strategic communications priorities for SACE, including the agency’s communications plan, and program- and project-specific plans;
  • Oversee the implementation of the SACE brand and messaging strategy to ensure consistency across all platforms;
  • Plan, prepare, and organize communications activities to align with key campaigns, initiatives, and external opportunities;
  • Lead internal discussions to determine agency messaging and direction with respect to emerging and ongoing issues regarding sexual violence prevention and response and provide strategic communications advice to the team.

Content Creation, Design & Storytelling:

  • Develop and manage engaging content, including stories, newsletters, impact reports, and video scripts that highlight the impact of SACE, and ensure alignment with agency values, branding, and key messaging in all communications;
  • Research, draft, edit, and share content through SACE social media streams in alignment with strategic SACE priorities;
  • Analyze engagement metrics and adjust digital strategies to optimize reach and effectiveness;
  • Design and edit SACE brand materials using Adobe Creative Suite and Canva;
  • Coordinate, manage, and implementpublic awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, and advocacy efforts (e.g., Sexual Violence Awareness Month);
  • Assist with managing the SACE website, including analytics, SEO optimization, and accessibility;
  • Coordinate storytelling projects that engage the public and highlight key organizational priorities in collaboration with SACE leadership and theFund Development & Donor Relations Manager.

Public & Media Relations:

  • Remain current on best practices in nonprofit communications, crisis communications, and media relations;
  • Support media activities including events, op-eds, media requests, and media advisories and releases where appropriate;
  • Support SACE leadership in preparing for media interviews, speaking engagements, panel discussions, and other public events as required.

Organizational Collaboration & Development:

  • Support the Fund Development & Donor Relations Manager with fundraising and donor stewardship and engagement as needed;
  • Support theProgramming & Evaluations Manager with grant writing and reporting as needed;
  • Write and contribute to reporting, including funding reports and Board Reports;
  • Manage the creation of the Annual Impact Report;
  • Assist the Fund Development & Donor Relations Manager with the agency’s annual internal United Way campaign;
  • Ensure strong collaboration and positive relationships with programs, staff, and community members.

Administrative Duties:

  • Manage communications spending with the support of SACE leadership to ensure cost-efficiency while achieving the desired outcomes;
  • Coordinate and manage external directory listings and posts on external sites including job boards;
  • Manage projects and relationships with third-party communications vendors, including external graphic design and communications contracts;
  • Oversee communications-related administration tasks, including funding and media database management, and digital file management.

Other Duties:

  • Provide support through the SACE Support and Information Line and Alberta’s One Line for Sexual Violence;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Community Engagement and/or CEO.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s level degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or other related fields;
  • 5+ years of experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or related role;
  • Experience working in confidential environments requiring a high degree of discretion, such as in a management or senior leadership role;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issue of sexual violence;
  • A combination of related education and experience working in the field may be considered.

Eligibility:We understand that clients who have accessed our services may want to work at SACE, and ask that it has been at least two years since your last engagement with either counselling or Support and Information Line services before applying. It is important that our Clinical Director does not feel that your employment with SACE would in any way compromise your healing, or create an ethical dilemma regarding a dual relationship with your previous counsellor.

Support and Information Line training dates: The successful candidate will be asked to attend the SACE Support and Information Line training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and some Saturdays, in September, October, and November 2025. The staff will be compensated for these training hours with time off in lieu (TOIL).
