Position Title: Public Programs and Membership Manager

Position Summary

The Director of Public Programs plays a critical leadership role at Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, responsible for developing and executing dynamic programming and events that increase public engagement, drive ticket sales, and enhance member acquisition and retention. This position oversees the strategy, planning, implementation, and evaluation of all public-facing programs, both onsite and outreach-focused, with a goal of expanding visibility and impact while supporting the Foundation’s mission and revenue objectives.

Working cross-functionally with Marketing, Development, and the Visitor Experience Team, this role also manages the membership program, ensuring strong engagement, growth, and loyalty among members through stewardship, targeted promotions, and exclusive events.

Key Responsibilities

Public Programs & Event Development

  • Strategically develop, plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive calendar of public programs and events that drive visitation, revenue, and engagement.
  • Ensure all programming aligns with the Foundation’s mission and goals, including educational, seasonal, and community-based events.
  • Oversee the execution of Hermitage-produced events and serve as the primary liaison for third-party event organizers renting space on the property, ensuring alignment with site policies and standards while delivering a seamless guest experience.
  • Serve as the lead contact for event inquiries, including unsolicited or cold requests, and determine if such opportunities align with our mission and are feasible.
  • Collaborate with Marketing to promote programs across digital, print, and earned media channels, ensuring maximum visibility and attendance.
  • Work with the web team to maintain and regularly update website content related to public programs.

Membership Strategy, Management, and Database Administration

·Partner with the Development team to lead and implement an annual membership strategy that supports revenue goals, deepens engagement, and fosters long-term member loyalty.

·Oversee the development and execution of exclusive member communications, promotions, and events to enhance the membership experience and encourage renewals and upgrades.

·Create, manage, and analyze membership reporting within Tessitura software, monitoring key performance indicators including acquisition, retention, renewal rates, and overall revenue performance.

·Maintain data integrity within the Tessitura CRM by ensuring that all member and constituent records, including contact information, relationships, contribution history, and communication logs are current, accurate, and properly maintained.

·Monitor and perform high-level Tessitura functions and provide mentorship and oversight to the Development Associate on routine system operations such as gift and pledge processing, campaign structure, reporting, and record maintenance.

·Develop and implement a cross-training strategy to ensure Development team members are proficient in essential Tessitura functions, promoting greater team efficiency and data literacy.

·Create and maintain documentation of Tessitura processes and workflows to ensure long-term consistency, training support, and operational transparency.

Administrative & Cross Department Collaboration

  • Develop and manage annual department budgets, ensuring programs remain financially sustainable and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Contribute to interpretive planning and educational program support as needed.
  • Participate in internal committees and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment across departments and consistency in messaging and program execution.
  • Engage with Hermitage guests, visitors, and members in a professional, informative, and welcoming manner.

Qualifications

Education & Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Public Administration, Marketing, or a related field required.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field is a plus.
  • Background in history or related field preferred

Experience & Skills

  • 3+ years of experience leading public programs, events, or membership initiatives, preferably in a museum, historic site, or cultural institution.
  • Proven ability to develop, market, and evaluate engaging public-facing programs and events.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and engage diverse audiences.
  • Experience using membership or CRM systems (Tessitura preferred but not required).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with a high degree of attention to detail and organization.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory, and team collaboration skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to interact with a wide range of ages and physical abilities.
  • Ability to perform light physical work, including lifting up to 10 pounds, bending, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods.
  • Regular use of office equipment and computers is required.
