Public Health Physician, Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Disease Services (IPVPDS)

Position Overview

The Public Health Physician provides medical leadership within the Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Disease Services (IPVPDS) team. Working closely with the Senior and Senior Practice Leader, and reporting to the Medical Director, this role offers medical expertise and leadership for the assessment, implementation, and evaluation of provincial immunization programs (such as childhood and high-risk adult vaccines). Responsibilities also include surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases and invasive Group A Streptococcus infections, outbreak investigation, program and policy analysis, and strengthening provincial public health networks.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide epidemiologic expertise and consult on communicable diseases to Medical Health Officers, the Provincial Health Officer, and the Minister of Health.
  2. Monitor, interpret, and recommend actions based on surveillance data for various communicable diseases, with emphasis on nosocomial, vaccine-preventable, and respiratory-borne diseases.
  3. Assist with communication strategies, including media interactions, briefing notes, and public relations.
  4. Prepare epidemiological reports and provide advice on disease control policies.
  5. Participate in public health research and coordinate outbreak investigations across jurisdictions.
  6. Develop educational materials and attend relevant meetings and conferences.
  7. Provide on-call services as scheduled.
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) from a recognized university.
  • Postgraduate degree in Epidemiology or Public Health.
  • Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) or equivalent in Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics with Infectious Disease training, or Medical Microbiology.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • Proficiency in clinical medicine, computer skills, and communication.
  • Experience in public health, especially in communicable disease control, is required.
