Public Health Physician, Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Disease Services (IPVPDS)

The Public Health Physician provides medical leadership within the Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Disease Services (IPVPDS) team and works closely with the Senior and Senior Practice Leader. Reporting to the Medical Director, this role involves providing medical expertise for the assessment, implementation, and evaluation of provincial immunization programs, surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases, and invasive Group A Streptococcus infections. The physician supports outbreak investigation and management, policy analysis, and offers expert consultation on communicable diseases to strengthen public health networks and emergency management.

This role involves collaboration with communities, health authorities, Indigenous organizations, provincial ministries, and partners to address public health issues, uphold Indigenous rights, eliminate anti-Indigenous racism, and promote reconciliation within public health initiatives.

Specific Accountabilities
  1. Provide epidemiologic expertise and consultation on communicable diseases, including outbreak management and population-based prevention measures.
  2. Monitor and interpret surveillance data, with emphasis on nosocomial, vaccine-preventable, and respiratory diseases, and develop surveillance systems and initiatives.
  3. Assist with communication strategies, including public briefings, media interviews, and information dissemination.
  4. Prepare epidemiological reports and provide advice on disease control policies.
  5. Contribute to research, develop outbreak control proposals, and coordinate inter-jurisdictional investigations.
  6. Develop educational materials and participate in meetings, conferences, and committee work at various levels.
  7. Provide on-call services during scheduled hours.
Qualifications
  1. MD from a recognized university.
  2. Postgraduate degree in Epidemiology or Public Health.
  3. Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent in Public Health & Preventive Medicine with specialization in Community Medicine, Infectious Disease, or Microbiology.
  4. Registration or eligibility for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.
  5. Proficiency in computer and statistical software, clinical medicine, and excellent communication skills.
  6. Experience supervising staff, working in interdisciplinary teams, and at least one year in public health with communicable disease control responsibilities.
  7. Assets include experience as a Medical Health Officer, epidemiologist, or in infection control, and skills in research and grant funding.
