Hours of work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, typically 8:30am - 4:30pm

Salary Range: $46.00 to $54.59 per hour per collective agreement

Calling all Public Health Nurses and Baccalaureate prepared Registered Nurses! We are hiring PHNs at Peel!

The Immunization Services Division is a singular, self-sufficient, and integrated vaccination program within Public Health that works collaboratively with internal and external partners to improve protection in Peel against vaccine preventable diseases.

The Immunization Services Division requires a self-directed, flexible, and enthusiastic Public Health Nurse with strong communication, facilitation and nursing assessment and analysis skills to deliver services in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards for Vaccine Storage and Handling Protocol.

Team Specific Responsibilities:

  • Implement Ministry of Health Vaccine Storage and Handling Protocol and Guidelines
  • Conduct vaccine fridge inspections for all fridges that store publicly funded vaccines in primary care offices, pharmacies, long-term care and retirement homes, and any other facility in Peel that store publicly funded vaccines.
  • Provide education and teaching on strategies to maintain safe and effective storage and handling of publicly funded vaccines to reduce wastage
  • Conduct cold chain incident investigations and follow up with vaccine manufacturers to determine disposition of vaccines exposed to adverse storage conditions
  • Provide Intake Line coverage to support vaccine storage, handling, inventory and cold chain incident inquiries and reporting
  • Work collaboratively with team members,demonstrating flexibility, adaptability, problem solving, effective communication and continuous quality improvement, to meet the operational needs of the program and clients
  • Work collaboratively with other health professionals and agencies (e.g. physicians, localhospitals and community health agencies) to ensure minimal wastage of publicly funded vaccines and adherence to safe practices of storage and handling of vaccines
  • Documentation and data entry in electronic documentation systems (e.g., Salesforce) and reporting in Ministry databases (e.g., Panorama)
  • Contribute to program planning, evaluation and the development of program innovations and continuous improvement initiatives

Team Specific Requirements:

  • Regular travel in the community and facilities across the Region of Peel is required. A G class driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
  • Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.

What you will do…

  • Apply knowledge regarding concepts of population health status, inequities in health, determinants of health, and strategies for health protection and promotion to guide practice
  • Utilize research and evidence and apply critical appraisal skills to inform policies, programs and practice
  • Provide health information, teaching and counselling to clients
  • Use a holistic approach to assess the health status and functional competence of clients with consideration of the impact of the determinants of health
  • Identify and analyze how clients' culture, attitudes, beliefs and feelings about health influence interventions
  • Establish mutually determined goals with client, including outcome indicators and evaluative measures
  • Facilitate client engagement in identifying and defining health issues using community development and community assessment skills
  • Participate in the planning, developing, implementation and evaluation of community wide and site-specific public health strategies using Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM)
  • Advocate for and contribute to the development of healthy public policy
  • Collaborate with partners to identify and address public health issues and service gaps in order to achieve improved health outcomes
  • Develop, foster and facilitate inter-sectoralpartnerships and networks using team building, negotiation, conflict management and group facilitation
  • Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches and strategies with diverse populations
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Promote awareness of the Region of Peel and Public Health services
  • Participate in research, quality assurance initiatives, and mentor-shipopportunities as appropriate
  • Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards and principles
  • Fulfill legal and professional obligations and responsibilities in accordance with relevant legislation and departmental policies, procedures and medical directives/acts as an ambassador for the Region of Peel, Public Health Services and Public Health Nursing
  • Perform other duties as assigned which support the organizational goals
  • Respond to public health emergencies, significant events and incidents as required by the Health Protection and Promotion Act and Emergency Standards

What the role requires:

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized by a Canadian University
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current CPR certification, Level C or HCP, is a requirement for Public Health Nurses in Family Health
  • Experience in public health or community health nursing is preferred
