Job description

The Curator is responsible for planning and implementing the exhibitions for the Lake Country Art Gallery. The Curator will work closely with the Executive Director on all planning.

Specific Curatorial Duties :

  • Generate plans for exhibitions in the Art Gallery, which will involve creatively planning exhibitions, originating concepts for exhibitions, seeking opportunities for exhibitions, researching, responding to opportunities for unique exhibitions.
  • Produce and manage "Calls for Artists".
  • Complete communication related to exhibitions, including but not limited to interactions with artists, communications, letters to artists, communications regarding policies and procedures, forms, invitations, and thank you letters.
  • Timetable exhibit runs application deadlines, delivery dates, opening reception dates all in consultation with the Executive Director.
  • Provide documents for the Executive Director by August of each year that is a summary of the following year's exhibition plans.
  • Present a more detailed annual exhibition plan for the upcoming year to the Directors at the January Board Meeting.
  • Present the promotions copy and draft press release for each exhibition to the Executive Director to enable the exhibition marketing and promotion of exhibitions to proceed in a timely manner.
  • Arrange artist talks, critique sessions or other public events related to exhibitions.
  • Be responsible for the Gallery Preparation Committee and its work to prepare the gallery walls, install technical components, and other needs required for each exhibition.
  • Be responsible for the Installation Committee, setting expectations of handling artworks, and its work to install and dismantle the exhibitions.
  • Direct the goals and protocols of the exhibition interpretative materials, including labels, brochures, artist's statements and other didactic materials.
  • Produce a catalogue or a brochure for each exhibition as appropriate.
  • Provide the date, and any other specific requests for the opening receptions of exhibitions to the Friends of the Gallery Committee.

Position Hours

The Curator of the Lake Country Art Gallery, shall perform its duties within these hours : averaging 80 hours per month, an annual total of 960 hours. It is the responsibility of the Curator to coordinate the hours appropriately, as needed.

NOTE : Additional hours may be available dependent on funding.

NOTE : There may be special projects that require additional hours by the Curator. Those additional hours will be determined by each specific occasion and by available funds.

Qualifications and Skills

Required :

Degree in Fine Arts, Curatorial, or Museum Studies, or related field.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Additional Assets :

Familiarity with website tools such as Weebly or WordPress .

Visual Arts Curatorial experience.

Experience working with community or public arts.

Non-profit organizations.

This is a part time position with an annual salary of $ 26,400.

Any additional hours for special projects will be paid in addition to the contracted hours at a n agreed hourly rate. Any additional hours must be approved by the Executive Director.

The Lake Country Art Gallery is a public art gallery located in Lake Country, BC, in the Central Okanagan. The gallery hosts on average eight exhibitions each year, featuring local, regional, provincial and nationally based artists, as well as members and community shows. Entering its fifteenth year of operation, this young, dynamic gallery continues to grow and establish itself with quality exhibitions, events and programs. It supports professional, critical, and community art practices, thereby providing creative contributions to the culture of the Central Okanagan region.
