What We Do

Since 1973, The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care.

The Community Health Clinic provides team-based primary health care and integrated social supports for individuals and families of all ages experiencing barriers to accessing traditional services, with a focus on comprehensive wraparound care that addresses medical, mental health, and social needs.

Psychiatrists at The Alex Community Health Clinic provide appointment-based psychiatric services in a non-judgmental, holistic, and opportunistic manner. Working alongside interdisciplinary team members and primary care physicians, psychiatrists provide consultative psychiatric care with a trauma-informed and harm reduction perspective.

This is a part-time position.

What You Will Do
  • Consultative outpatient psychiatry practice for individuals referred from primary care providers at The Alex Community Health Clinic.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with family physicians, nurses, mental health clinicians, social workers, client resource specialists, pharmacy, etc.
  • Facilitate and support team members to work to full scope of practice.
  • Complete Mental Health Act forms when appropriate.
  • Respond to acute concerns as appropriate for a psychiatrist in an outpatient setting.
  • Support The Alex in quality improvement, quality assurance, and evaluation initiatives, as appropriate, to advance the organization’s theory of change and clinical practice.
  • Maintain accountability for ARP billing processes, including the completion of accurate and timely shadow billing for both direct and indirect client care using EMR systems.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
What You Bring
Required
  • Member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
  • Familiarity with the Alberta Mental Health Act.
  • Compassion for clients with challenging socioeconomic and life situations.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage medical IT systems – EMR, Netcare.
  • Medical references, a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and child welfare intervention check.
Preferred
  • Prior experience working with vulnerable populations (e.g. homeless serving sector, refugee health, remote outreach medicine, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of addiction medicine.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action.
Work Environment and Hours
  • Work is primarily conducted at The Alex Community Health Centre: 2840-2 Ave SE, Calgary, AB.
  • 0.2FTE (7 hrs/week).
  • Tali AI Scribe access is available for provider use.
  • Compensation for direct, indirect, and collaborative patient care through The Alex Alternative Relationship Plan (ARP).
  • Administrative supports are provided in the areas of patient panel management, appointment flow management (including bookings, confirmations, and rooming), referral facilitation, and other related services.
  • Integrated, team-based medical practice with multidisciplinary team members.
  • This position involves constant extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, and occasionally requires climbing stairs.
