Job summary

A leading health authority in Victoria seeks a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Worker to provide treatment and support for individuals with mental illness. Qualifications

Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Worker participates in providing client-focused treatment, rehabilitation, and support for persons with mental illness in a residential, community-based facility. The role includes participation as a member of the multidisciplinary team, including case management as required. Responsibilities include planning, developing, implementing, delivering, and modifying clinical services based on client needs within the program's guidelines. The worker motivates, assists, and instructs clients with activities of daily living, prepares and escorts patients to off-site activities, monitors and reports on residents' conditions, including reactions to medications, and assesses clients' ability to assume self-care responsibilities.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Grade 12 graduation, supplemented by post-secondary courses related to mental illness.
  • Minimum two years of recent relevant experience working with persons with mental disorders, including teaching life skills, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certificates in CPR and Food Safe.
  • Valid BC Driver's License; if required, ability to obtain a Class 4 Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, including clients' and staff's rights and obligations in the facility.
  • Understanding of psychosocial rehabilitation principles, using a client-centered approach.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, with a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Ability to develop rapport with clients and utilize it to facilitate understanding of their illness and rehabilitation process.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to employ aggressive behavior management techniques.
  • Judgment skills to operate within the program philosophy when supervisors are unavailable.
  • Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
