The Psychiatric Registered Nurse I is a clinical position resulting from the recommendations of the Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador. The Action Plan identifies a number of initiatives as a part of a Stepped Care Approach to Mental Health and Addictions Services throughout the province.
One of these initiatives, Mobile Crisis Response (MCR) (Memphis Model) is a collaborative approach in which police and mental health professionals work together in responding to mental health crisis in the community. Once the team is established in Central Health, the psychiatric nurse will participate as a member of the crisis intervention team in provision of appropriate interventions in Mental Health crisis situations through the utilization of community base mental health approaches. The successful candidate will work closely with the RCMP in the implementation stages and in the ongoing operation of the team/service.
Prior to the full implementation of MCR and in keeping with the Stepped Care Approach to Mental Health and Addictions Services, this position will be responsible for providing professional standards of regional psychiatric nursing interventions for patients presenting to the ER with mental health concerns. Regional services to ER departments will be accommodated through telephone consultations and the use of Telehealth as required.
This position will work closely with the Regional Social Worker, who will work a corresponding shift in JPMH (or CNRHC).
The successful candidate will exercise a significant degree of independent clinical judgement, quick decision making and the ability to assess and intervene competently in various mental health concerns including crisis situations.
