About the job

In this role you will ensure the overall security of the Centre complex, its installations and exhibits, and the safety of the visitors and staff. You will promote the image of the Centre and uphold the corporate mission and values to the visitors and encourage their use and enjoyment of the facilities while requiring them to observe restrictions and procedures for their protection and safety.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • You are proficient in English as well as oral French at the advanced level.
  • You must be in possession of a valid Standard First Aid, CPR and AED certificate.
  • You have the ability to work shifts, weekends and holidays, including after-hours event coverage.
  • Valid Security Guard Licence under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability to render first aid and attend to visitor's comfort pending arrival of 911 (e.g. illness, epileptic seizures, injuries, fainting, excess of alcohol and drugs).
  • Knowledge of Fire Alarm Systems; Card Access Control systems; locking mechanisms (mag locks).
  • Knowledge of Public Address systems; Security Cameras systems (CCTV).
  • Knowledge of the powers of a Security Officer.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and fire evacuations in order to evacuate the building in the event of fire, bomb or power failure and as fire wardens under the direction of the Chief Fire Warden or Alternate.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS, the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Trespass to Property Act.
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet, etc.).

Communication Skills

  • Written communication skills to develop reports and keep a detailed log of incidents / emergencies to report to Central Control.
  • Communication Skills to maintain communications in fire, bomb threat and other emergencies by relaying instructions to visitors by PA, to staff by radio or telephone, etc.
  • Ability to respond to requests for information verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • Tact and patience in dealing intelligently with irregularities and incidents, maintaining good public relationships and using authoritarianism as a last resort.
  • Provides effective customer care services for visitors; promotes and upholds the OSC corporate mission and values.

Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Skills

  • Ability to remain composed in stressful and potentially threatening situations.
  • Conflict resolution skills to reach peaceful solutions in volatile situations.
  • Ability to promote and influence compliance with related legislation and standards.

Analytical and Investigation Skills

  • Ability to gather information and evidence.
  • Analytical skills to identify problems and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to evaluate observed irregularities and incidents, taking immediate personal action to inform, remind, persuade visitors re : restrictions and safety rules etc.
