Position Overview

The Protection & Control Technologist is responsible for conducting system studies and based on the results, recommend protective, metering and control devices needed for substation projects and issue the associated settings and programs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform system fault and protective device coordination studies.
  • Prepare and issue protective relay settings.
  • Analyze and investigate system faults and other disturbances.
  • Interpret requirements and recommend appropriate metering schemes and remote control schemes.
  • Assist in programming meters and remote control devices.
  • Liaise with field personnel, external stakeholders and vendors.
  • Function as part of a substation design team.
  • Perform a variety of technical tasks related to the development, engineering, and installment of civil, physical, and electrical power systems.
  • Perform a variety of technical calculations to support distribution design.
  • Provide technical support to designers, co-op engineering, and tradespeople.
  • Create new or modify existing protection and control standards.

Other Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of engineering studies software (Aspen).
  • Ability to quickly learn new software.
  • Ability to program protective, metering and control devices.
  • Project management – ability to schedule work in coordination with project teams.
  • Strong team building and professional relationship skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for liaison with suppliers, vendors and utility personnel.
  • Working knowledge of the tendering process and ability to analyze tenders and make purchase recommendation.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 High School Diploma with two-year electric or electronic or computer technology course.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computer systems including Word, Excel, Access, MS Outlook and AutoCAD.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage a wide variety of tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail.
  • Good understanding of transmission and distribution systems as related to protection, metering and control issues.
  • 3 years of electrical substation design experience.
