This position will be responsible for delivering front-line technical P&C support for operations, completing transmission outage analysis, investigation, and reporting, and supporting compliance to the AESO Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) requirements.
The successful candidate will be reporting to a Supervising Engineer Transmission Operation Engineering and will play a pivotal role in analyzing reliability data, coordinating reliability improvements, and providing real-time engineering support to enhance grid resilience.
Responsibilities:
- Review daily transmission outages (CROW reports) and complete timely gathering of all event data available from protection relays, ION meters and other monitoring devices.
- Analyze relay event records and other outage data to determine root cause of system events. Record findings in ATCO Electric’s Forced Outage Investigations database in accordance with Electricity Canada reporting methodology.
- With support from Senior P&C Operations Engineer, lead or support cross-functional teams in investigating major outage events and operational incidents. Prepare investigation reports to document root cause findings, remedial actions, and lessons learned.
- Follow up with Field Services, Engineering staff and other stakeholders for missing outage information and track status of any action items assigned to these groups until completion.
- As required, complete reporting to external entities including Electricity Canada, AESO, and other stakeholders.
- Provide on-call engineering support if required
- Support the implementation of innovative solutions, tools and processes to improve reliability performance indices (SAIFI and SAIDI).
- Provide apparatus and line reliability statistics when requested by planning groups, customers, and other stakeholders.
- Perform sparing studies and spare relay management for entire ATCO Electric Transmission and Alberta PowerLine protection relay fleet.
- Act as standard owner for several Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) related to the P&C discipline. Gather and organize evidence to demonstrate compliance.
- Report and investigate any suspected non-compliance issues related to ARS. Participate in ARS audits and respond to information requests.
- Provide P&C-related technical support for real-time issues arising on the transmission system, and work with stakeholders to resolve these in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with industry peers on matters related to power system reliability.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA.
- A minimum of four (4+) years of related Protection & Control engineering or operations experience, preferably within an electrical utility environment.
- Knowledge of electrical theory and principles underlying the design of electrical power systems and their protection and control, applicable codes, and industry standards including Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Standards.
- Experience with protection and control software, including relay settings software (AcSELerator, DIGSI) and fault analysis software (ASPEN OneLiner).
- Strong technical and engineering skills and ability to arrive at practical solutions to technical issues that represent the best engineered solution to optimize cost, risk, and reliability performance.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with strong listening, written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple work priorities and initiatives to meet commitments.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- A valid Alberta driver’s license (Class 5).
