Job description

Proposal Writer
Help Win the Work That Builds the Future

About MacKay
We’re not just in the business of moving dirt. We build the foundations that communities grow on. From roads and bridges to utilities and mine infrastructure, MacKay takes on the civil construction projects others avoid. With over 40 years of proven performance, we’re expanding our reach, and we’re looking for a Proposal Writer who can help us win the right work and tell the story of how we get it done.

How You’ll Contribute
You’ll be the voice behind the bids. As our Proposal Writer, you’ll craft high impact proposals that win contracts and build trust. Working closely with estimators, project managers, and senior leadership, you’ll take complex, technical information and shape it into clear, persuasive submissions that reflect our capabilities and culture. Your work will directly influence the growth and trajectory of one of Western Canada’s most respected civil contractors. This is your opportunity to shape not just proposals, but outcomes.

What You’ll Get to Do

  • Lead the proposal process from kickoff to submission. Setting timelines, coordinating input, and delivering polished, professional content that stands out
  • Write compelling narratives that tell the story behind our numbers, showcasing why MacKay is the right team for the job
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to extract insights, highlight strengths, and align strategy with client needs
  • Build and maintain a library of project profiles, resumes, and boilerplate content to improve speed and consistency across submissions
  • Research clients, competitors, and industry trends to sharpen our positioning and win strategy
  • Continuously refine templates, processes, and workflows to improve proposal quality and team collaboration
  • Support the creation of prequalification packages, capability statements, and other business development content
  • Participate in post-submission reviews to assess performance and identify ways to improve for the next win

Who You Are
You’re not just a writer; you’re a translator of technical expertise into opportunity. You thrive on deadlines, love getting into the details, and know that the best stories are the ones that win work. You work well with both engineers and executives and bring curiosity, confidence, and clarity to everything you write.

You have

  • Experience writing proposals in civil construction, engineering, or similar fields
  • A talent for clear, persuasive writing and a knack for turning technical details into compelling narratives
  • Working knowledge of RFP and RFQ requirements in the construction sector
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, especially under pressure
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook (Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools are a strong asset)
  • The ability to build strong relationships across departments and work collaboratively toward tight deadlines

Even better if you have

  • Familiarity with civil scopes of work like roadbuilding, excavation, utilities, and mine infrastructure
  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Marketing, Business, or related fields (or equivalent experience)

What’s In It for You

  • You’ll be based at our Cranbrook, BC office, close to the projects and the people who make them happen. You’ll occasionally visit project sites to better understand our work and craft proposals that reflect real-world challenges.
  • Expect a mix of field visits and in-office collaboration, Monday to Friday, with flexibility depending on project timelines and submission deadlines
  • You’ll gain hands-on exposure to the full project lifecycle, from pre-bid strategy to debrief, and learn from seasoned construction professionals
  • Competitive compensation, training and development, opportunities for growth, and a team that takes pride in doing the hard things well

At MacKay, we believe great people build great projects. If you’re ready to help us grow with purpose, and win work that matters, we want to hear from you.
