BACKGROUND
Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology (AC) is a publicly funded English-language college and a member of Polytechnics Canada, located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The College serves the National Capital Region and the surrounding areas of Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, and Upstate New York. AC has three campuses: the main campus in Ottawa, Ontario, and two secondary campuses in Perth and Pembroke, Ontario.
The Information Technology Services (ITS) department at Algonquin College provides support to approximately 65,000 individuals, including students, faculty, administrative staff, and distance learners.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK / DELIVERABLES
The Senior Project Manager will support the ITS department by leading and implementing multiple initiatives. The consultant will collaborate with IT leadership and other key stakeholders to ensure the effective planning, development, and execution of these initiatives, delivering all assigned projects on time, within scope, and on budget, in alignment with ITS PMO standards and best practices.
The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for the following:
- Oversee the established project vision. Define project objectives, scope, and deliverables in collaboration with project sponsors and stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain detailed project plans, identifying deliverables, estimating durations, and allocating resources. Manage comprehensive project documentation (e.g., requirements, scope, schedule, cost, communication, resources, risks, issues, change management, and quality).
- Monitor and control project progress in accordance with corporate policies and standards. Facilitate effective meetings and deliver milestone presentations, issue resolution strategies, and regular status updates. Provide comprehensive reporting and proactive problem-solving.
- Manage project risks, including contingency planning and critical path analysis. Ensure risk mitigation strategies are in place and executed effectively.
- Integrate and evaluate change management strategies. Monitor implementation efforts, address transition issues, and ensure business risks are mitigated through appropriate recommendations and follow-up.
- Ensure adherence to appropriate project management methodologies throughout the project lifecycle. Provide teams with necessary tools and support.
- Apply high-quality project and program management practices across all stages of the project lifecycle.
- Lead and manage cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams to achieve project objectives.
- Manage communications and maintain effective working relationships with clients and stakeholders.
- Produce and deliver monthly reports, including project schedules, risk registers, and progress summaries.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and business partners to develop and implement comprehensive business cases supporting project recommendations.
REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related IT field.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent experience.
- 8 to 10 years of project or program management experience, including at least 5 years managing large-scale projects.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with experience engaging a wide range of stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and work collaboratively across departments.
- Expertise in project management methodologies, including issue resolution, risk management, resource planning, and effective team facilitation.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work closely with Product Managers.
- Detail-oriented, while maintaining a strong focus on strategic objectives and results.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with a proven ability to motivate teams and foster collaboration.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to address complex challenges through analysis and innovation.
