Job description

Orla Mining is striving to be the emerging gold producer of choice with a geographically diversified asset base, a prospective development and exploration portfolio, an experienced management team with a successful track record, and a high-quality board and shareholder base.

Orla operates the Camino Rojo Oxide Gold Mine, a gold and silver open-pit heap leach mine, located in Zacatecas State, Central Mexico. This low-cost operation is 100% owned by Orla, covers over 139,000 hectares, and includes a large sulphide mineral endowment located beneath the oxide resources. We are also advancing permitting and development on our South Railroad Project, a feasibility-stage, open-pit heap leach project located on the prolific Carlin trend in Nevada. This project is part of our larger South Carlin Complex which includes a prospective land package. We recently acquired the Musselwhite Mine located in Northern Ontario on Lake Opapimiskan, a gold mine with more than 25 years of operating history. The addition of Musselwhite has allowed Orla to more than double our gold production and provide a strategic entry into a Tier 1 mining jurisdiction. The Musselwhite Mine is highly prospective with potential to expand resources and mine life for years to come.

Orla is building a legacy of excellence, respect, and sustainable value through responsible gold mining.

We are striving to create a net positive benefit for all and leave a legacy beyond the life of our mines. We do this through building and operating high-quality mines supported and led by an experienced team. We are custodians of the assets we run and the environments in which we operate, and we are committed to fostering a culture of excellence, care, and respect.

Purpose:
As part of our acquisition of Musselwhite Mine, we are recruiting a Project Geologist to join our Exploration team at the Musselwhite Mine. This onsite role will support the execution of exploration programs, including target generation, core logging, sampling, and real-time interpretation of results. Through technical contributions, data management, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams, the Project Geologist supports the success of exploration initiatives, upholds safety and environmental standards, and provides mentorship to less-experienced geologists.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Contribute technical expertise to daily program execution, including drilling, logging, and sampling.
  2. Provide real-time geological insights and assessment of results to ensure discovery-driven focus of exploration programs.
  3. Contribute to target generation, assessment, and project pipeline management.
  4. Collect data, compile, and interpret geological information from exploration drilling.
  5. Assist with geological and structural modeling.
  6. Log core, interpret drill sections, aid in developing geology model(s).
  7. Model proactive problem-solving and decision-making.
  8. Provide coaching and development of less experienced geoscientists.
  9. Support and reinforce a positive team culture, emphasizing safety and collaboration.
  10. Oversee work performed by less experienced geoscientists and ensure quality work is completed.
  11. Ensure that company and industry standards are followed in all exploration activities.
  12. Conduct routine QA/QC checks on collected data and coordinate corrective actions with the Data and Land Geologist.
  13. Understand downhole surveying techniques, investigate potential errors, and correct them as necessary.
  14. Identify opportunities for incremental cost savings in operations.
  15. Report budget discrepancies or resource issues to the Senior Geologist.
  16. Mentor junior geologists and field technicians through daily guidance and feedback.
  17. Provide regular updates to the Senior Geologist on project status, technical issues, and team performance.
  18. Conduct on-the-job training sessions for new hires on safety, logging protocols, and data management.
  19. Facilitate information flow within the geology team and maintain a positive, collaborative environment.
  20. Prepare reports and presentations, including creating maps and figures as required.

Skills and Experience:
  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Geosciences or related field with knowledge of geological principles.
  2. 6 to 8 years of exploration-related industry experience.
  3. Registered with the Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO), or working towards accreditation.
  4. A strong track record in exploration program management, along with exploration successes and discoveries, is a plus.
  5. Structural geology skills considered an asset.
  6. Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  7. Excellent communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation).
  8. Write and present comprehensive reports on geological findings.
  9. Capable of lifting and carrying up to 45 lbs of equipment and/or samples for distances up to 8 kilometers. Must be able to load and unload core boxes weighing up to 50 lbs onto logging tables.
