Qualifications

  • Foundational understanding of construction estimating processes.
  • Familiarity with construction specs, drawings, materials, methods, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of quantity takeoff, procurement, pricing, and bid-closing principles.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with clients and teams.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Experience with estimating software and MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects.
  • Analyze architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Calculate material quantities using detailing software and takeoff methods.
  • Develop labor hour estimates based on project complexity and site conditions.
  • Evaluate equipment needs, crane requirements, and logistics costs.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and operations to validate estimates.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations.
  • Maintain historical cost databases and productivity metrics.
  • Identify risks, value engineering opportunities, and constructability issues.
  • Support contract negotiations and change order pricing.

Position Overview

As a Project Estimator at Steelcon, you will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for complex steel projects, analyzing project specifications, and supporting our Canadian & US business development efforts through competitive bidding processes.

Key Responsibilities

Estimation and Analysis

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects ranging from small to large projects
  • Analyze architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents to determine project scope and requirements
  • Calculate material quantities using steel detailing software and traditional takeoff methods
  • Develop comprehensive labor hour estimates based on project complexity, site conditions, and crew productivity rates
  • Evaluate equipment needs, crane requirements, and logistics costs for project execution

Project Management Support

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and operations teams to validate estimate assumptions
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations
  • Maintain and update historical cost databases and productivity metrics
  • Identify potential risks, value engineering opportunities, and constructability issues
  • Support contract negotiations and change order pricing throughout project lifecycle

Business Development

  • Actively identify, pursue, and bid on new project opportunities through market research, and client outreach efforts
  • Prepare professional prequalification and proposal package, including technical approaches and project schedules
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, architects, general contractors, and suppliers
  • Track market conditions, material pricing trends, and competitor activity
Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience in construction cost estimating or a related discipline.
  • A foundational understanding of construction estimating processes.
  • General familiarity with construction specifications, drawings, materials, methods, and procedures.
  • A clear understanding of quantity takeoff, procurement, pricing, and bid-closing principles.
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and completeness in all estimates.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subtrade partners, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with estimating software.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project).
  • A willingness and aptitude for learning new technologies.
  • Primarily in office work environment

Location: Vaughan, ON

Hours of Work: Monday to Thursday 8:00am to 5:00pm, Friday 8:00am to 3:00pm
