Are you passionate about shaping the future of transportation in a vibrant and growing city? The City of Edmonton invites aspiring engineers to join our dynamic team as a Project Engineer in Training (EIT). This is a unique opportunity to launch your career in a supportive and collaborative environment, contributing to meaningful projects that directly impact our community.

You will be involved in the design of arterial and other transportation facilities approved under the Capital Program, to be completed in-house or by external consulting engineers. EIT assignments are of limited scope and complexity, supervised by signing engineers (Project Engineers and Senior Engineers), working alongside technicians and technologists. You will participate in producing Concept, Preliminary (Development), and Detailed designs for transportation projects, including rehabilitation, reconstruction, and streetscape improvements for roadways, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities.

You will assist in producing internal submissions, reviewing external submissions, coordinating project activities with stakeholders, and supporting planning and design activities by allocating staff and resources. Independent decision-making and recommendations are expected, with reporting to a Senior Engineer.

If you are motivated, enthusiastic, eager to learn, contribute, and grow within a forward-thinking organization, we encourage you to apply and help us build a better Edmonton for all.

What will you do?

Under the supervision of the Senior Engineer, you will:

  1. Collaborate with in-house engineering technologists to prepare and recommend design approval for Concept, Preliminary, Tender/Proposal, and IFC engineering drawings.
  2. Assist in preparing technical reports and analyses for Concept and Preliminary Design deliverables.
  3. Support project management teams to ensure timely delivery of in-house design projects.
  4. Apply the City of Edmonton Complete Streets standards, TAC guidelines, and best practices in design.
  5. Conduct preliminary site walks and data collection to assess feasibility, conditions, constraints, and issues.
  6. Review utility installation circulations within arterial project areas.
  7. Coordinate and manage as-built drawings and document control with engineering technologists.
  8. Provide feedback on external design submissions for approval.
  9. Respond to inquiries from consultants regarding design practices, standards, and exceptions.
  10. Address public inquiries related to transportation projects.
  11. Participate in City committees or working groups, such as safety, engagement, or change management groups.
  12. Support health, safety, and environmental programs within the department.
  13. Conduct fieldwork or site inspections as needed.
  14. Assist project managers with stakeholder and public engagement activities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Must be an Engineer in Training (EIT), in good standing with APEGA, working towards a P.Eng designation. Applicants from other Canadian jurisdictions with IPMA eligibility may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained before employment starts.
  • Field experience in transportation is preferred.

Skills required for success:

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms).
  • Commitment to service excellence, diversity, and inclusiveness.
  • Alignment with organizational cultural commitments and leadership competencies.
  • Knowledge of equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion principles.
  • Understanding of City policies, standards, and guidelines related to transportation.
  • Applicants may be tested on relevant skills.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of roadway geometric design, standards, and guidelines such as the City of Edmonton Complete Streets and TAC guidelines.
  • Co-op or summer experience in transportation or roadway design.
  • Familiarity with City bylaws, standards, and procedures.
  • Additional training in traffic, structural, drainage engineering, or roadway construction techniques.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D.

Conditions of employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent; may require business auto insurance.

Work Environment:
